help! mercruiser ignition problems

I could use someone's help. I have a 1979 Somerset with a mercruiser 228. I don't think I'm getting enough voltage to the positive side of my coil. Is there a ballast resistor or a resistor wire in the system?

Thanks
Charlie

Depends, if points and condensor system, then yes.
what is the problem?

yes, it has a points and condensor system. The problem I'm having is it won't stay running at an idle after it warms up. So after running, we stop and then it won't go into gear without dying. If I put 12v to the positive side of the coil it will run ok.

No, something else is wrong.runs good cold, stalling hot: carb issue, coil issue
stalling going into gear may be a lower shift cable activating the shift interupter.
using full battery voltage will burn up the points, condensor and coil.
