Re: help - Merc 400 E

Sounds like a good start. I'm not sure of age, but it sounds pre-70s (by the # you give).
You might be able to tell from a review of the following link. You'll need the "acrobat reader", but it should automaticly load-up the page.
On the Mercs, Johnsons, and Evins, you can get the proper book by comparing the case styles, as they cover 15 years in some cases.
But an outboard has two determiners as to wheather it's worth rebuilding or not. One is the powerhead, (compression, ignition,fuel
delivery). The other is the lower unit,
(Geartrain,seals,prop,impellor).
If both are in salvageable condition, go for it,no matter make model or year (unless it's an old Elgin). And even some those,are still
in service and going strong. Ohwell,got long-winded, here is that link;
http://www.boatfix.com/sections/books.pdf#zoom=125

------------------
Time to change my tagline

Hi
It is a 1960 or 61 yr if it is a 4 cylinder.
I would not rebuild it. Just set the points at .010 and make sure thier is grease in the LU. Watch the water pump as you don't know how old it is. Unless your going to restore it, then do what you want
