Hi,
I bought a boat with a Alpha One coupled to a 302ci Engine. The outdrive needs a bit of work (it is not shifting properly), and I would like to buy a shop manual to help me out with the repairs and maintenace.
The problem I have is I cannot posatively identify exactly what model I have. The serial number is 0F110717, which leads me to beleive it is a 1991 - 1995 Model Alpha One Gen2 (from this webpage http://www.perfprotech.com/store/articles/alpha1-alpha2-sterndrives.aspx). But this is inconsistent with this page (http://www.sterndrive.info/sterndriveparts/identify_my_outdrive.html) which states that the Gen2 drives havea 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" Cap - my drive has a 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" cap. To add to the confusion, I asked the guy I bought the boat from what he remembered about this drive, and his memory was that it was a Alpha One - MR, installed new in 1995 (motor was not replaced at that time).
Any help would be really appreciated.
Mike

Re: Help me identify my Alpha One

Ayuh,... A 302 Ford hasn't been used since the late 70s...
They were 188s, 'n 888s, which are just MC-1 drives, like the top picture, 2nd of yer links...
An Alpha 1, the middle picture in that link, May have been bolted to the old transom assembley though...

I really Doubt you have a Gen.II...

Yes, the boat was manufactured in the late 70's It does look like the 2nd picture (no lift hook - smooth 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 cap). The part that confuses me is the serial number. Does anybody here have access to a Merc database to lookup and confirm?

Hey mike if you could were going to need to see a few good pictures of what your drive looks like.

The serial number in this particular case is not going to give an accurate description of your drive.

You serial number is showing two completely different years depending on how we look them up through Mercury marine. Oneway said 1990 and the other said 1993. Big differents between the two.:)

Re: Help me identify my Alpha One

Reading throught the manual, I read this:

-----------
Use Of Older Model Sterndrive Units
On Mercruiser IR-IMR Models
Mercury Marine does not recommend the use of older
model sterndrive units on IR-lMR models, as the
units will not mate up satisfactorily with the transom
assembly. In addition, the older in-line model sterndrive
units are equipped with U-joint coupling end
yoke (39385A1). This yoke is shorter than yoke
(59830A1) used on the IR-IMR sterndrive units and
therefore, will not fully engage the engine coupler
splines. USE OF AN OLDER IN-LINE MODEL
STERNDRIVE UNIT ON A IR-IMR MODEL WILL
RESULT IN A SPLINE FAILURE TO COUPLING
AND/OR YOKE.
------------
Is this the setup that I appear to have?

No, You have an MC-1 transom with a newer Alpha 1(non gen II) drive on it. Get the Alpha One manual.

Re: Help me identify my Alpha One

no

you have a newer drive on an older setup -perfectly fine

what they mean is they don't want an older drive on a newer transom assy

some of the older driveshafts were shorter and did not fully install into the engine coupler
