Hi all,

This is my boat. I generally thought it may be an 80's era Springbok, but I really didn't care that much when I bought it.

A few months have passed, and I'd like to mount up a 25HP Evinrude I just purchased, and toss the 9.9 Johnson into storage. Thing is, I'd rest comfortably knowing that the boat can legally handle a 25HP. But to know that, I'd need to know what boat I have first.

The metal badge on the transom has lost all information. Can anyone assist with boat id and also max hp rating?

Many thanks,
Mark

It looks just like my 14' Starcraft which is rated for a 20 hp. This is a photo pre-restore

Yep, lots of resemblances, agreed. My boat has a larger hood or cap on the bow, and yours has more bracing on each of the seats, where mine has just one set of braces.

Anyone else??

I would say you should be safe with 25 Horse on that one my 16' Jupiter is rated for up to 85 horse and I have a 14' fiberglass Cutter that has a 45 Horse merc hangin off of it .

Tiller steering lowers the HP rating. You can not compare them to standard steering.

That looks pretty similar to a 1950's Arkansas Traveler I just bought.

Hey Mark -- just got your PM (sorry been out of town). That is indeed the exact model Springbok I have (but much better condition). I'm going up to the cabin this weekend where she is sitting waiting for some TLC. I'll take a pic of the transom plate for you although I can't remember if it's still readable. I do recall though when it was new, and I was a wee tyke, that it had a bizarre max rating of 17.5 hp. Even as a five year old I remember thinking that was a strange rating. I believe the year of mine is early seventies...

Anyway, in later years I tried to put a much bigger motor on it (either a 15 or 20 Merc I belive) and it wasn't real happy (sat very low in the back and with the minimum freeboard the water seemed awful close. I spent my childhood using a 7.5. We even installed a console which I really thought was the cat's *****

If it is an 80s model it should have a hull ID # stamped on the transom. That would be a good starting point.

Reviving an old thread but I agree with Scoutabout, that Springbok looks exactly like one my cousin had, and it was rated at 17.5 hp - sounds like some cop-out by the manufacturer, as if 18 hp would be too much...? There were many 18's made, but never a 17.5 hp by ANY manufacturer.
