I have a 98 Bayliner with the 120 Force outboard on it. I wish I had went with any other brand than Bayliner and Force. I have had problems since day one with this boat. I am having a problem with my engine now. The warranty is expired so I don't want to take it to the dealer unless I hae to. The problem is that both of my carbs shoot fuel out of the sides of them. I had just finished replacing the gaskets on the carb bowls(?). I hooked fuel line back up and pumped it a few times. No more leaks from the gaskets, but now fuel shoots out the sides of both carbs. It comes out of a hole on the side. It looks like some kind of little port or something. Is there a hose that is supposed to connect the two carbs. I don;t think there is because I don't remeber seeing a hose there before. Sorry for the long post, please help if you can.
Chris

------------------
1998 BAYLINER CAPRI 1800
120 HP MERCURY FORCE

Re: Help! Force 120 problems

There is only one thing that can cause this problem.
A stuck float valve needle inside the carb.

Gently tap the side of the bowls, while someone pumps the ball. It should quit.
It could re-stick again at the worst possable moment,so I would re-build the carbs before venturing out.

Remove it.
Take the bowl off.
Remove the pin holding the float to the carb body (like a tiny door hinge-pin).
Try not to bend the stop or otherwise change the adjustment of the float. This is easier said than done, but be gentle.
The needle valve is in the body of the carb, and is probably stuck in there. But get some tweezers, and pull it out.
Get a can of spray Carb cleaner, and spray it thru the hole the needle came-out of,till your sure its clean. This model may have a rubber seat in the hole,so let the cleaner evaporate good. Also, clean the needle valve with liberal amounts of the spray. DO NOT soak the needle or carb body in a carbonic cleaner (that comes in the gallon can). These cleaners will desolve all plastic and rubber.
The spray cleaners are the same, except they contain a drying agent,so it evaporates within a few minutes.
Re-assemble your carbs, and they should be fine.

------------------
Time to change my tagline
