I have a 97 ski brendella pro comp with a 5.7 tournament mercruiser.

I assume I just loosen the belt on the lower left side unbolt the case and the impeller is inside? West marine couldn't find the impeller size by checking the boat. I'm just trying to get it prepped for the season. I can get a oil drainer that takes it out from the dip stick tube. is the oil filter on the bottom like most cars? Also what oil do you recommend? Synthetic? Any particular weight? Unfortunately I don't have the owners manual.

Also on a side note what's the best way to brighten gel coat? Any particular wax? Boat candy or any high end car wax?

Agree serial number would help a bunch, but just noticed something int the first picture. The bottom right hand corner of this photo, isn't that your oil filter, or is it the gas?

On a side note, I had some unfortunate events take place late summer last year and as for winterizing all I could do was run some seafoam and fuel stabilizer through it and cover it. It doesnt get below freezing here for maybe more than an hour so I'm sure nothing is cracked. But when I put the fresh battery in it it just turned over. When I throttle up shouldn't I see gas feeding into the carb? Maybe a fuel filter? I think its this piece in the pic. But there is also a hose running from the carb to a piece that looks like a small cylinoid brake booster piece. Sorry for the undescriptive nature.

Your water pump could be a 1 piece or a 2 piece design. Either way, the impeller is THIS one. And the fuel filter is THIS one... (As a member of the iboats forum, we prefer to promote products on the site that is providing you all this free information. Please shop here...)

Do you guys think the fuel water seperator could be why its not starting?

Re: help changing impeller, oil, and waxing

Have you done the diagnostics and determined what's missing? (Fuel, spark, compression, something else?)

It could be causing you some issues, one of which is starting. But more then likely it would cause poor performance before it clogged up so much it would not start

Re: help changing impeller, oil, and waxing

By 'diagnostics' I mean have you determined if you have spark, if fuel is getting to the engine (pull the cover off the carb and have someone pump the throttle (once!) and watch for a squirt of fuel), checked the engine cylinder compressions....

Doesn't matter if it ran beautifully 10 minutes ago, if it's not running now, you need to 'diagnose' the problem, and we do that with a logical, step-by-step procedure. We can use a different method, called 'shot-gunning', which involves just thinking of a part and replacing it because 'it might be the problem'. The downside of that method is that it can get very expensive very quickly, and you'll end up with more problems than you started with. So, let's diagnose the problem, logically and thoughtfully. Start by pulling the spark plug wire off one of the spark plugs, putting an old spark plug (or a new one if you have one) into the end of the lead, laying it on the engine block (it MUST be a good ground for the spark to go back to the coil), and cranking the engine to see if you have spark.... The spark needs to be a nice fat blue one, not a weak and wishy-washy yellow one...

Re: help changing impeller, oil, and waxing

Tried pouring a little gas in the carb. No change. Might be in my mind but seems like its cranking a little slow. I had to cover up, cuz we have some rain this week. Don't think I'll make my Sunday goal. Tried un screwing the fuel water seperator and it wouldn't budge. I'll get a spark tester to see if I'm getting spark this week. Im wondering if the fact that the fuel water sep was stuck has anything to do with it. Rust maybe? I remember last summer when i bought it the guy got it off by hand.

The batt is good. When i throttle it i dont see any gas coming out. Also shouldnt the choke plate move when I throttle it?

Yes, when you throttle you should see gas squirt into the throat of the carb. When cold and the throttle is moved it should close and if it goes full forward it will start to open, then close back when throttle is pulled back. Keep in mind I am talking about what happens with the engine cold, not running.

You poured gas in the carb and it did not start, so it's not gas right now. Need to find out why your not getting spark.
In your post 5 you mentioned seeing a small tube going from the carb to a "small solenoid brake booster thing", that is your fuel pump, and the line is there to tell you if the pumps diaphragm has ruptured. Don't worry about it now.

To further define what your setup is
Weber 4BL carb
No external oil filter. Oil filter should be on the port side at the bottom of the engine

Yes, you remove the pump completely, remove the plate on the back to replace the impeller.

This should be the impeller that you need:

so I tested wires 1-4. I didnt have a second set of hands to see the spark on 5-8. But one through four had a small spark about every second while turning over. still cant manage to loose. that fuel water seperator. There is a clear yellowish hose running from what I think is the fuel pump, I dont see fuel coming out. but it won't start evem with fuel in the carb. Maybe replace the fuel pump? I'm just ready to tackle the easy stuff like waxing and cleaning to get her out on the water, hah.

Have you done a compression test? The spark needs to be a nice healthy blue one. If it's weak and yellow, find out why...

You really just need to take the boat to someone who can fix it, sorry but your really in to deep from what your telling me. You may need a fuel pump, but as before if it won't start with putting gas down the carb replacing the fuel pump will not get you any closer.

Ya it was day time but it looked yellow.

I think you're right about taking it in. Im just wondering what "could" be wrong and how much it "could" cost
