Help. Can't stop!

I ran into a new problem today. I was out on the lake and went to turn off the motor (125 Mercury outboard) and it would not stop. I disconnected the batery and it still kept running. I reconnected the battery, it chugged a few times and stopped (the key was in the off position). Is this a switch problem? Everything is tight and looking good. It will start up fine and all other electrical things work but the engine won't stop. Any ideas?

does it cut off with switch some times or never. could be bad connetion or wire at key. battery has nothing to do with it stopping just starting. and it may be wiring connetion bad on kill switch at motor.
