I have a 1974 Mercruiser inline 6. I started noticing last summer that I can't get to full WOT which normally is about 4600. It idles and cruises just fine but it won't go any higher than about 3800. Someties it runs good around 3800 and other times it surges and hesitates a bit. I have not changed prop and carb was rebuilt 3 years ago. New plugs put in year ago and I have changed fuel filter and run couple cans of seafoam and used can of gumout carb cleaner. Fuel pump is only about 3 years old as well. I also took out fuel pump filter and installed a canistor type water separator fuel filter. If there was a problem with carb wouldn't it also not run well at idle and cruise? I was thinking of attempting to try to rebuild carb, it does't sound too extremely hard to do oneself. Also going to put some seafoam right in the fuel pump.
