Re: HELP, Brand New Volvo 3.0 blew up.

I can't see were he tore it down; dam new software.

Origional Post 3rd paragraph

Last week I bought a brand new 2006 Glastron SX 195 with a 3.0L Volvo penta stern drive. Took delivery of it on Saturday and she took her madden voyage on Sunday. Launching went fine, started easily and had to keep it at about 2k RPM till 150 degrees untill it would idel at 700, and go into gear.

When giveing it throttle it would bog down and hesitate then take off. As soon as on plane backed down 2400-2600 rpms. Motor was running ruff but i wrote it off as bad gass in line being a left over from last year. After about 10 minutes, motor not a happy camper, sounded like running on three cylinders. Stopped, turned off motor and gave it a quick eye to see if something obvious. Nothing. It would not restart for aporx 1 Hr. when it did limped it back to boat ramp.

Next day dealer did comprestion test and #4 cylinder had 0 psi. He said that is caused by hydro lock and I must have done something. After tearing it down he said it is the head gasket that failed alowing water into the cylinder. Volvo said will replace motor but now I am without for 3-5 weeks till repair is complete.

My areas of concern;

Is there a problem with water comeing back threw exhaust port and causeing this type of problem? The service manager was very quick to say that is what happened. How could that happen?

How is the reliablity of the Volvo, perticulary the 3.0? I have no faith in them and certainly question there quality.

What should iI expect from my dealer? I want a full refund on my boat and be able to apply it to another brand of boat with a diffrent maker of engine.

I am emotional about it as I have worked an extra day every week for 2 years so I can buy a new boat. Now I am getting a new peice mealed boat with a bad history. Any feed back is great. Sorry so long winded.

Some of you guys need to join the real world......

New things break.. and Nobody is perfect...

Granted the dealer should be on this and getting it fixed ASAP. Especially if he was the selling dealer. Nothing anyone on this forum can do anything about.

mhunt.....Gaskets sometimes leak... even new ones. May have been a defective gasket, maybe a warped head or block. Who knows, nobody asked the robot that built the engine.

paulrfrancisco ..... An engine sitting for a year does not blow a head gasket for that reason. There was a defect. The dealer will warranty it to Volvo, Volvo will warranty it to GM. Thats how it's done.
Trust me, even car engines fail.

imported coors....The dealer pulled the head because there was 0 compression on one cylinder. I would have done the same thing. Pop the head off, find the problem, call Volvo and get a new engine on the way ASAP. Then go back and get the old engine out and ready for the new engine when it gets there.

What a great board!!! Thank you all soo much. I spoke to the owner of the dealership and he told me he is willing to cancell the entire deal with the Glastron and move my deposit to any other boat he has and start fresh. Now I have some more opptions. I hope I get a good one, what ever it may be, this time. More research to do and tough decisions to make. But one peice of good news, I found a board with lots of people with good imput. Thanks again. Black Snow Slide

Sounds like a reasonable solution to me.
Good Luck.

I would second the 4.3 suggestion. Also, don't count Glastron out, they make a good boat. Agree with the others, your biggest issue may be the dealer. Machines, even new ones, occasionally fail. It's about the dealer getting you back on the water.

I'm only an iboats cadet, but here me out.
There are check valves (brass flappers) that prevent waves from flowing (backwards) into the cylinders via exhaust valves. That is one cause of hydrolock, one of the more common reasons. My mechanic found one of mine (broken) when he was changing out the stern drive impeller. Blown headgaskets, cracked manifolds, cracked blocks- yup they can make it happen too. Basically anything on the water circulation system that pushes water into the cylinders instead of flowing from the inlet impeller through the cooling jackets, and out the exhaust to the lake.
Later I had hydrolock issues that have caused me about $5 grand (including one "two week fix") to resolve. A partial teardown didn't find anything, including some testing. It was cheaper to quit tearing down and put a replacement engine in.
I think hydrolock is in many cases a sneaky event that rips the heart out of a boating season and the boat's owner.

I understand that Volvo stopped using the flappers.

They have never been brass, Merc, OMC, and early Volvo SX/DP-S used to be rubber covered stainless steel. Merc went to composite material, and Volvo stopped using flappers altogether in 99, (See service bulletin 25-2-5) on the SX and DP-S drives.

Don't give up on the Volvo, they make a darn good drive, probably better than Merc.

Good luck,

Rob.

********** Up Date ***************

I am looking at a new Wellcraft 180 sportsman. It has a 115 E Tec Evenrude. It is a bowrider with a little flavor for fishing and water sports. Not as cushy as the Glaston sx 195, but I think its a nice boat. Any feedback?

That engine is a GREAT engine...personally i love outboards, much more versatile and overall faster than IOS....not to mention cheaper up keep, alot less hassle....doesn't take space up in the boat...etc....i would personally go for it. personally if i had to pick one boat and stick with it, it would be the glastron 180 GXL fish and Ski with a 150 etec evinrude...i would check that rig out if i were you..... http://www.glastron.com/us/boatpages/gxl180sf.html

Good thing. A SX195 is too big for the 3 litre engine anyway, you wouldn't have been happy for very long. It is big enough that a 5 litre should be standard. I have one with a 5.7 VP and it is quick.
