925 for a used drive.... na I'll pass, Old everything with that, u-joints, impeller. If you gotta replace those parts your looking at a couple hundred extra.

1300.00 for brand new, everything, yoke, ujoints, Impeller. with a 3-year warranty, anything goes wrong:

hes a dealer and i mentioned SEI-marine, he buys from them too, he is going to check tomorrow and see if he can get me a better price than $1295 :D

thanks haulnazz, so there is no gear ration stamped on it, if it was off a 470 it would be a 1.8 gear ration, but its off a 4.3 which everyone says is a match but were there other ratios used on a 4.3 or am i solid on this find?

If it's the original drive it should be a 1.84. Are they asking $800 or $300 for that? IMHO, $800 is WAAAYY too much to roll the dice on a used drive v. getting a new SEI. $300 I'd take a chance...

x2... add u-joints, and a new whole impeller kit and the price gets even closer to SEI.

Re: HELP! Blown Outdrive, what will fit this?

...also does 1.98R mean reverse rotation?

Nope, 'R' was the model... 1983/4...

History of Mercruiser drives (again)

1967-1982 - Mercruiser '1' drive (known as 'MC-1')
1983-1984 - Mercruiser revised drive (known as 'R')
1985 - Mercruiser Major revised drive (known as 'MR')
1986-1991 Alpha One
1991-current Alpha One Gen II

Major assemblies (complete lowers and complete uppers) are interchangeable between all 1967 to 1991 drives, and any will bolt up to any 1967 to 1991 bell housing. Parts within the major assemblies are NOT interchangeable.

Nothing is interchangeable with GenII...

Most of the time the overall ratio is determined by the gear tooth ratio in the UPPER box (there is one exception, but you are not likely to be seeing any of those)... For the most the gear tooth count in the lowers are all the same...

For another $300 you can get a NEW SEI 106 (1:81) with a 3 yr warranty. No question which I would go for.

All right...this is a real learning experience for me... I am getting confused (not hard at my age anymore)...

The craigslist link in post #31 is for an "Alpha-1" drive, but it has "1.84R" stamped on it, which Chris says means "R" model, 1983/1984 vintage. If that is the case, then my 1990 Chaparral with the supposedly "original" Alpha-1 outdrive (complete with the Alpha-one sticker, and the stamping that says "1.65R") is not really a 1990 Alpha-1, but a 1983/84 "R" model disguised to look like an Alpha-1??? The P.O. swears this is the original drive purchased with the boat new in 1990.
Somebody (namely the P.O. and maybe his dealer) has some splainin' to do!!! Somebody please clear up my confusion!

Not sure, but I'd imagine the "R" behind the 1.86 probably stands for "Ratio" or "Right-Hand", it isn't a designator for the"R" model drive. Just a thought.

I tend to believe it is "ratio" myself (although even that is kinda redundant) .... As far as I was led to understand, all uppers rotate one way. Counter-rotation is a function of the lower. I have never seen a 1.65L designation, but I am open to learn about it! (I have heard rumors of uppers built to rotate the other direction, but havent seen the parts list for them).

Chris's post indicated that "1.98R" designated the "R" model drive in answer to KCKracker's question (see post #29)....I am waiting for the Supreme Mariner and/or the Oracle to clarify.

Re: HELP! Blown Outdrive, what will fit this?

The "R" after the gear ratio number is the abbreviation for ratio. The "R" is also stamped on Alpha One Gen II and Bravo models after the ratio number. The serial number is the only way to identify the drive model for those not familiar with the physical aspects of the drive units.

So where's the 'R' on this photo of my Gen II drive????

That bit's correct...

That's a good question! Maybe they figured out that putting "R" on there for "Ratio" was redundant....
