I noticed you mentioned the ignition switch. the ignition switch is off. we only use the main circuit breaker and the fuse blows. don't know if that could be any help...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, disregard may last post, I was typing while you were posting/

Just some information that might help. On the fuel pump relay, the lbl/w wire is the ground for relay control. The ecm controls the grounds for the relays, not power.
Also, do not assume that the location of the wires on the diagram are the same as on your engine. Volvo had some service bulletins that may show the wires on the wrong pin. Just look at your wiring and find the right pins, the colors are right, the location may be wrong in the diagram.

Here is another manual that may help

Good MORNING! It's only about 8:20 am here.

Have you tried removing the relay completely and seeing if the fuse still blows?

removed every one of them, there are only the fuses left in the box. and it still blows:( is there a possibility that it may be the ECM module who has gone bad? Surely hope not...

Look at your wiring diagram. If the F3 fuse is the one blowing, and you removed the R4 relay, and the fuse still blows, there is only 1 thing that can be wrong. The red/purple wire from the fuse to the relay is in contact with the ground causing a dead short. Nothing else it could be.

It is the F6 fuse that blows...

My mistake, I thought you said it was the fuel pump fuse.
Disconnect the terminal from the computer and see if the fuse blows. if it does, the red/purple wire going to the ECM is shorted, if it doesn't blow, the and the terminals are all in good shape and not bent and corroded or full of water, then the ECM is probably bad.

Dammit, my worst fears came true.
That is a pretty expensive component... We tried to disconnect the terminal yesterday. and the fuse didn't blow. So it is most likely the ECM...
