Hi guys!
Some of you would say im crazy and will abandom me as all my mechaniks did, but some would back me up and help with advices.
bought this regal commodore 290, 1992 couple of years ago. It had mercs 5.0, which I was planning to rebuild, but my mechanik told me no point, better new ones. So I bought two brand new 5.7.
Long story short boat has sunked a month ago due to neglect, bilge pump malfunction due to poowr wiring by first mechanik.
Now pulled up.
Second mechanik drained water from engine, lubed it all, took starters and alternators down for repair about one month ago. Engines haven't been started. Promised this weekend to come and start the engines.

Third mechanik came to see the boat, said this one is Too far gone, buy new one.
Thats not The plan!!!
Plan is full overhaul of boat, mainly by myself. Conversion from alpha to bravo 3 outdrives, conversion to hardtop.

While waitng for mechaniks to come and sort out the engines and install brand new transoms and all needed for conversion, which is already bought and is partially delivered I have stripped down all the foam, knocked down all separations and kitchen, and rubbed and washed all inside, ready for closed cell foam and upholstry to go up, which I also have.
All work done betwin work shifts on my main work. Im doctor. And I can't paint paintings, but i can spray paint cars. I can also do most if not all mechaniks job need to be done.
Today my mechanik gave me a news that he wont be able to come to do transoms and stuff this w'end, after two weeks preparation and negotiation.

So im going to do it all with your help and help of YouTube.

For now my biggest issue is I dont have outdrives, mainly because I dont know what ratio needed.
Boat weight is 4.6 tonnes, engines are carbed Mercs 5.7. No numbers on old outdrives, too corroided, otherwise its alpha 1gen1, but I think they were 1.65/1
 Pictures will follow.

No luck again, no mechanics this w/end, as starters solenoids not working, need replacement.
However, after couple of days of research I have decided to go with bravo 3 1.81/1 28". How far wrong would I be with it? I will survive if only props size adjustment will need for it.
Thank you guys!

Is this tread in wrong section or something?
Strange, there's no responses for questions I'm asking, that most of you would know for sure. Probable I will know it too when I'm done with this boat, but for now I need some help.I know that no one owe me anything, but what this forums are for if not for helping each other, discussing things etc.
I'm actually willing to pay for information I need, cause i can't find any reliable boat engeneers here arround. The one I've found said boat is too far gone. What? Strong hull, newish engines, enough funds, willing to do, what else needed?
The question was: what ratio bravo 3's needed for 29' boat, weight 9k lbs with twin mercs 5.7 carbed engines. WOT approx 4.5k
I've registered in other forum first, specifically make oriented, and there was not a single reply! So I really appreciate your input.

It is not clear (to me, anyway) what you are asking. Are you sure you sure your engines are good after being under water? What about wirng harnesses and electrical components? Do you have pictures you can post?

Hello Turmans

I must admit that your questions do not really pops up reading your thread:)

We are also rebuilding a boat that most would have considered too far gone on an economical point of view.
We went through rebuilding engine that was badly neglected but managed to salvage it without too much costs and basic mechanic tools.
I would say that your engine conditions will depend on how many time they spent in the water (salt water?) and how quick they were dryed and relubed when you pull up the boat.
For the drive ratio and for what I know of it, it is all given in the mercruiser manuals then you would have to adapt the prop for your boat application.

also if the boat was sunk for a long time I would inspect all wooden structural parts. any imperfection in the glassing had allowed the water to go inside.

good luck to you with the rebuild I will be following your post.

Hello Boaters.
Thank you very much for your reply.
It stayed in water for 4 days, and engines were dried and lubed by mech straight away. Hope there will be no problems. Or I'll take them out for rebuild. I'm not quiter
i have removed all interior wooden parts, even though they were fine, no blown or someth. Just doesnt suit me.
its dry inside now.
The question for now is gear ratio. I have decided it to be bravo3.
And i am keen for 1.81. And its look like ill be able to get pair of them new for decent price aswell. And then will trial it.
Boat is on trailer and yesterday i hooked up my SUV to it and it was pulling it with no problems at all! So now it will go faster!

so question again. 1.81/1 is it fine?

Hey,

I'm not familiar with Bravo 3 as we have an old alpha one on our setup.
For our unit the manual calls for a 1.5 ratio on V8 and 1.8 ratio on V6.
that's what we have done but not tryed it on the water yet...
If i had to guess I would say 1.81/1 seems on the high side of it.

This is just our experience, do not take it for "the truth" I don't want you to buy the wrong gear ration because of me :)
you may have better luck in the mechanic section of the forum.

Okay I looked everything up. Did the plugging and chicking on the calculators. Compared it all to the stock specs for your boat new. Yes that drive ratio is just fine for it.

Hello Chevymaher,

I would be interested as well to know what type of calculator you use to check the gear ratio just to check the math on our config.

Thanks for your help
