4 weeks ago I purchased a pontoon boat with a 90 horse power Force motor. It ran great except for it would not recharge the battery so when I used the accessories- lights, radio, etc. the battery would die. This boat just had a new stator installed before I purchased it. So I asked the mechanic who replaced it to check on it. He has now replaced the switch box, all three coils and still had a charging problem. They said water was leaking in from a head gasket and causing a short. All gaskets have been replaced including exhaust seals where they say is where the water was leaking into the system. Now they say the compression in the pistons is out of wack. 1- 135lb 2-115 3 -145
but it is charging the battery at about 13-14 amps. Now they are telling me that just one piston is not firing and the other two are fine. Anyone ever heard of these problem and can suggest a cure? I have read a lot of good advice coming from you folk so I thought I would join this forum. Thanks for your input! PS the mechanic said he's never seen anything like this and is a qualified boat doctor.
Thanks

Dan, if what you say is gospel, then you need a new boat doctor!!! absolutely none of this has anything to do with charging the battery.......not running on 1 cyl, well that is another prob......but i still wouldnt trust this guy farther than i could throw him.....

Thanks for the advise. The mechanic is going to talk with another mechanic today and if they can not fix this problem, I will seek out a new mechanic.

Re: HELP!!! 95 Force motor problems

I would insure the headgasket in installed correctly. and run a full can of engine tuner/deep creep thru the engine. The engine tuner may even out the compression some. I also would think you could get the engine to run with the compression like it is unless the rings are broken.

Re: HELP!!! 95 Force motor problems

Hi Guy's,
Thanks for the advise! I talk to the mechanic this afternoon and he insured me the gaskets and everything was back properly. They say it is still not firing on one cylinder. They can start the engine but it sounds funny. knocking sputtering sound. It is charging now and that was the original problem when I took it to them and it ran good at that point. Now I will wait until they test the stator and switch box again.
I guess I will try and find another engine at a reasonable price. Maybe a yamaha or something like that. Thanks again for your help.

Re: HELP!!! 95 Force motor problems

I've owned a 125 Force outboard now for 14 years and I've become a "forced" repair guy because if I was to take it to a service center for all its problems, it would be more economical if I owned a higher quality motor, such as a Johnson. I'm not admitting that force is high quality, but I feel more that it is bottom of the line. The CD modular power packs go bad quickly and they cost about $250 each. There have been too many times I looked forward to boating, but instead have gotten out the toolbox and gone to the dealer for parts. Life is short. time is valuable. Buy yourself a different brand outboard.

Re: HELP!!! 95 Force motor problems

ODDD1,as usual, is right on,Dan. The mechanic sells new motors, don't he?

This board has a lot of Force problems on it.
This is because there are jillions of Force motors out there. Mine are 1988,and 1990 respectively. They don't let me down.
They were the cheapest motor you could mount on a boat from 1985 to 2000,period. This is why they are so prevelant, and you couldn't trade me even-up for 2001 FICHT motors.
Sorry,it just gets old after a while.

Re: HELP!!! 95 Force motor problems

I think it could be Yamaha time for me what could I get for a slightly used 96 75hp force pwrtilt/trim. If I could sell the controls and engine for $3700 then I could buy a new Yamaha for $6500.
