HELP! 89 mercury 70 horse stuck in reverse

i just put the power head back on the intermediate housing it seems that when i put the shift road back in i may have put in the wrong spot? do i have to take powerhead back off to fix it and how do i fix it thanks in advance for your help

Just drop lower unit, realign splines and reinstall...

Hi i have the same problem only that i changed my impeller and then must have turned the spline shaft counter clockwise and now its stuck in reverse.. How do i get it back to the way it was so it can shift from F,N,R ? Any idea of how the splines have to line up with eachother and do i have to have someone on the boat to shift as i oput the unit back in ? Please any help would be appreciated !! Thank you in advance. :facepalm:

Drop the LU again and shift the boat into Fwd gear and set the LU to Fwd as well. You will know when it is in Fwd as follows:

Forward: Prop will not turn CCW but ratchets when turned CW.
Neutral: Prop will spin freely in either direction.
Reverse: Prop will not turn in either direction

Let me know if you have a problem and I will send you the condensed version of the manual.
