So my engine (J25ELCOC) 25hp johnson outboard from 1985 runs like a CHAMP, once it gets started! When I take it out it will start up and run fine until I turn it down to very low idle or neutral. There, it stalls. Once the engine stalls it will not start again unless I have someone put their hand over the carb and quickly turn up the idle to keep it going. I rebuilt the carb at the recommendation of a dealer, and went from 100:1 (what the engine calls for) to 75:1 - at the recommendation of the dealer (Who actually told me to go 50:1 but I was reluctant and went half way. I also noticed my gas cap is not vented, and there is no other vent that I can see on the tank. Is this something that is normal for my engine? Maybe it's vented through the primer line? I do know after running it yesterday I opened the tank and it made a hissing sound, but still it wouldn't start without the hand over the carb technique. Please help!
Also another quick question - the starter failed on me yesterday, too. It would spin but not rise to the crank. I tapped it and it worked. Is there something I can do to it so that doesn't happen again?
