So first time post. Not much in this world you can't find online but I did indeed look. The only two strokes I've dealt with were dirtbikes. First boat for me.
Its a 1988 Glassstream V160 I believe but decals are rough so not sure. No matter I picked this motor up in a shop, running, two weeks ago. I bring it home put it on my bass boat it fired up, seemed fine. Got it on the water and it wasn't fine.
It was very sluggish in the top end and didn't initially want to start. I spent 20 minutes dead in the water trying to get it to fire. Sluggish on the top end as in it almost seemed to be missing.
Take it home try to fire it and it was being difficult again. Eventually it runs and I notice frequent puffs of white smoke. Turns out the transfer port for the top cylinder was missing 3/4 of its gasket so that mist was the mixture probably not making it to the top chamber. I do and inline spark test and it has spark. I change out entire fuel line with filter and new primer bulb. no difference but it does have gas in the cylinder because its wet after many attempts to crank. Its has compression, 106, 110, 110. I checked time and that appears to be out so I borrow a timing light go to time it, think I have it right but still wont even pop. Just turns over and over and over. As I pull the choke or give it gas it loses its spark. Any idea on that? I'm not the type to pay someone else to do something I feel that I can do but after two days of struggling and chasing problems Id like the opinion of someone with the experience. There is no play in the flywheel so I feel like the key I hear about in there is not broken, however when I originally got the motor I noticed the timing adjuster up top was all the way in and the lock nut was halfway down the thread, so being the dumb a I am, I tightened the adjusters to the nut instead of the nut to the adjuster and that's been pretty much the point that I cant even get a pop out of it. I appreciate the time.

1996 Force/Mercury 90hp 3 cylinder two stroke.

Are you setting the timing at full throttle position while cranking ? You can't set these while running in idle. What you decribe sounds like a sheered key. See

That was going to be my last guess from what I'd read online. I appreciate the help. I will take the fly wheel off Friday and take a look for it. I will post the outcome.

Before you pull the flywheel. Just put a long screw driver in top cylinder gentlly. Turn fly wheel until it's out as far as it goes. This should line up timing pointer with the zero mark. If it does line up then the key is not sheered.
