Enginedude-

Welcome to iboats. :)

For these guys to help you, you will prolly have to post a model number. I dont think they made an 18hp Evinrude/ Johnson in 1987. I'm not entirely positive on that, but pretty sure someone else can verify that.

There should be a little square tag on the transom clasp that has the model and serial numbers on it. It should be on the Port/left side of the motor.

When you find it either post it back into this thread or look here and you should find an answer
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000012;p=1#000004

Edit: also there is a quarter sized metal "welch" plug in the block that should have a number stamped into it.

Nice motor; those electric-starts are sought after. You should get a good flow of water out of the holes in your top pic. The water should be quite warm, like for washing dishes.
If you just got the motor and don't know the maintenance history of it you really should drop the lower unit and replace the rubber impeller in the water pump. A new thermostat is a good idea too. That 18HP will run forever if properly maintained - don't be put off by its age. It was built to last and last and last.
Scroll to the top of this page, look about 2/3 of the way down, in the center, and you'll see a red "Search" button. Click that and search under "Fastwin Waterpump" or "18HP lower unit" or 18hp impeller" or something similar. Even if you don't do your own work it's good to read up and know the basics of your "new" motor.

Re: Help 1987 18 hp evenrude fastwin pisser location

Yours has a key switch for the starter where the kill switch button usually is. Someone used the existing hole to mount the ignition switch for the electric starter kit. Take a look at the ignition switch inside the cowl and tell us how many wires are hooked up to it. It may be rigged for both start and kill. If not you may need to use the choke to kill it.
You can't really run these 18-20-25 HP's on "muffs". They don't fit. Get a cheap trash can and fill it with water - better anyway because then you get backpressure on the exhaust. Still, though, never run it past high idle unless you're in the lake. Make sure the water in the trash can goes to am inch or two below those idle=relief holes in your top pic that serve as the "pisser".
Don't you believe that "no one really has the same motor". They made that motor for about 25 years. There are thousands of them out on the water every day. It's one of the most popular fishing motors ever built.

There are two wires hooked up to the back of the ignition switch.ok and the guy told me the motor ran about a year ago and I craked it up trying to use a 5 gallon bucket no water comming out so I shut it off. What do yall recommend me doing with this motor before I take it out fishing. Thank yall for history on this motor I was really worrying about it. What ever info you guys have to offer I am all ears.

Re: Help 1987 18 hp evenrude fastwin pisser location

A five gallon pail will work but you'd have to remove the prop and put something under the bucket to raise it up high enough on the motor. The water's gotta come up to within an inch or two of those idle relief holes. Look at where the water level would be if the boat were in the water with you sitting in the back - the water pump's gotta be submerged or it'll just suck air.
It sounds like you need to familiarize yourself with the basics of 2 cycle outboards. They are very different from 4 stroke lawnmowers and such. There is an excellent post in the Engine FAQ's for you to read:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000033
I dunno about being told the motor was a 1987. There's nothing wrong with a 1964 - in fact I love them and they're very well made, but the guy that sold it to you should have told you what you were buying. So check it over good mechanically before going out in the middle of the lake with it. That seller was not trustworthy and it's up to you to find and fix any flaws.

Re: Help 1987 18 hp evenrude fastwin pisser location

With just two wires going to that key switch it probably just runs the starter solenoid.
Stand on the starboard side of the motor - the side with the forward/neutral/reverse shift lever. On top of the motor is the pull start/recoil housing. Under that is the round flywheel with the gear teeth on it all the way around. Under that is the magneto - also round and a little smaller in diameter than the flywheel. That magneto should have two black wires coming out the bottom. Those are the kill wires - they ground out the points. See 'em? Where do they go?

I looked under the Magneto and there are two black wires running under it they run the screw looking switch above the starter switch. Which you could see from the picture I sent. My guess would be thats the kill switch but what do you think. The last motor I worked on was a f-16 motor no an marine motor so if I sound stupid sorry. lol.

enginedude , kencook.com has all your manuals. highly recommend you order them and study them. you will have a better understanding and it won't be nearly as frustrating. i have a 1955 15 hp evinrude i will never sell. run it every week. as far as ear muffs walmart sells a SeaSense muff with a rectangular rubber muff that fits my 15hp the round one will not work. i use it just to flush out any unwant crud i may have picked up while running.
