Hello,
I really like my 1981 Baja 16SS so I want it to last forever! However, I need to replace the transom. As you can see in the picture below, the wood is rotting and brown liquid is seeping out of it. Also, the gelcoat is cracked under the motor mount and the previous owner did a temporary repair. I would like to rebuild the transom from the outside. It looks difficult to do from the inside because the splash well is right behind the cap and there isn't much space. I don't want to separate the hull halves. I have some fundamental confusion regarding this process and any help would be appreciated.
The rear of the boat from the bottom to the cap (down the middle) is only about 34". It is 76" across at it's widest (where the halves meet). The cap is 2.25" thick and spans 34" in the middle (see pics). I understand that I need to measure in some distance to where I will be grinding into the rear to remove the skin and access the transom, how far should I measure in? Will there be enough of a hole to put the new transom through? It just seems small back there!
I would like to use coosa board. What should the layup be or how do you decide that and how do you plan for the final thickness of the layup?
Anyway, check out the pics and thanks for the help! (pics below)
