After spending a ton on parts to rebuild the lower gear case I got it back together tonight.
I replaced the brass bushing, gasket and rubber o-ring on the shift rod and it leaks like crazy!
I even used the tool made for this job to drive the bushing out and install the new one.
Used aviation gasket sealer on the gasket inserted first then the new O-ring and seated the brass bushing....
Going by the original OMC factory manual..
All surfaces were clean and it should not leak.
Any ideas to the guys that work on these old?
The O-ring has some resistance on the shift rod but I was not happy that it wasn't a tighter fit..
Ordered the original OMC parts.

Thanks Guys! Just came back in from the shop...I put a fatter O-ring in it and it passes a pressure test now! Fun tearing it back down for that!
It was the original OMC part number so not sure why it did not seal...

Yes...The o-ring fit but the inside diameter must have been off is all I can figure..

That thick special O-ring fits in that recess. ----Must be driven in all the way so it stays in there.

Fuel pump just likely need a new diaphragm.--=--Easy repair.----Compression test done on this motor , post your numbers here ?----Ignition coils inspected ?

That is really a "heat shield " and can be made from a cereal box.------Have never seen the little square pump on a 33 HP.-----These PRESSURE operated fuel pumps are very reliable and rarely fail.----New diaphragm will do the trick.

I just removed a similar heat shield behind a big cd18 fuel pump and added a square pump instead.. fits perfectly.

The wee square pump was used on 3 HP to 25 HP models.----But many other pumps fit / work well.

Thanks everyone! Compression is 120 on both cylinders cold.
Good spark but was getting no fuel.
Replaced all of the fuel lines and the owner told me to just replace the fuel pump..
Got the carb on the bench and it was in need of major cleaning..
I got the rebuild kit and about ready to bolt it back on the motor this weekend....
New hose and primer bulb also so hopefully it fires off this time.

The pump on this 33HP looks like the ones on my 175...different part numbers but looks just like it..

The early 175 V-6 used 2 pumps in series.----The pumps operate with PRESSURE pulses.-----A different spring will give the whole pump a different part #.----Same as powerpacks , many of them have different part numbers simply because wires are a different length.

I have 2 new ones in the box for my 175 and 6 carb kits...lol.
Stocking up on parts as they are getting more expensive for these older engines..

The only thing that could go wrong is the diaphragm in those pumps.----Easy / cheap ( $10 or so ) to replace.----Run the carburetors dry for extended storage.----An empty carburetor stays clean and will require a minimum of maintenance.----New float valve once in a while.----Used parts are not hard to find either.

The little 33HP was delivered today..Boat purrs like new.
Rebuilt gear case, all new fuel lines, pump, tank, and rebuilt card...bump the key and it fires right up.
The boat is a 1968 and looks new.
The owner stores it in a climate controlled garage...That thing is really nice!

Those parts were expensive for that 1968...Had to put all new bearings and a gear set.clutch dog and all in it.
