I recently purchased a boat that had a nonworking auto pilot on the helm. I want to take the auto pilot mechanism off, but the shaft leading from the rotary style helm is an odd size that the steering wheel will not fit onto. The shaft from the helm is 1/2" with a larger tapered collar on it. The shaft on the auto pilot is a standard 3/4" tapered shaft. Anyone have any idea what size shaft I might have so I can get a wheel to fit it? The shaft goes through the helm mechanism and is attached at the back with a nut. Does anyone know if I can simply remove the shaft and replace it with a standard 3/4" tapered shaft?
