Im new to the site and have a project boat. I have a 1980 Avenger by ceebee. This was my dads boat and he gave it to me. Years ago he had the gel coat replaced and now is peeling flaking off big time. He thought he was getting a deal but I think it was clear coated. It was so shot that today I was able to just pressure wash it all off. Which leads me to believe it wasnt preped when it was done. Any how I cant afford to have a gel coat put on and I know clear coat will have to be done every few years but has any one tried one of those diy kits? I was looking at the one by toonbrite. Im not to concerned with a proffesional out come just want to protect the paint. Any info would be very helpful

Re: Hello!

Hmm, dunno why I didn't see this earlier. Maybe it was on the wrong place or something?

Anyway, there are a lot of ways to protect your "shot" gel coat. What I'd recommend is a roll and tip paint job. Basically you sand the hull to prep it, fill any dings, make sure it's shiny smooth, then you paint with a good quality marine paint using the "roll and tip" method, where you roll on a thin layer of paint and use a brush to lightly flatten out any bubbles, resulting in a mirror bright finish.

You could also do a gelcoat job yourself, although I don't recommend that amount of work for most boats.
