hello good people, mecury 85hp blue band impellar prob

hello everyone,

big question to ask,
i have a merc 85hp blue band or thunderbolt?
i've done the impellar and still not got a good wee coming out, so i took off the leg to find the impellar pipe was blocked so stripped down and unblocked it, cleaned it all out, put back togeather and have only got a little flow of water and head is getting really hot, i can't think of anywhere else that is blocked?? i've put an air line though it and it seems to all be nice and free, is there anything you guys can think of that will help me wee better????

Do you have it in a tank or on muffs?

What was the water tube blocked with? Could be pieces of impeller lodged in the cooling passages in the powerhead.

Have you checked the telltale line to make sure it is clear? I've had mud dauber wasps plug mine up a few times.

Hello and thanks for your replys.
Its sat in a 50gallon drum. And it looked like there was a part of impellar in the pipe. And no stat fitted i think? There has been a bolt put in 2 replace it.
I've been told 2 put in some soda thought it. It helps clean out the head?
Is this a good idea?

Chester, that motor does not have a thermostat. You did install the woodruff key in the impeller, right?

hello chris 1956, yeah key is def in places, i had it all apart again to day, took power head off, turn't upside down and put soda though to soak, had impellar apart again, all seems to be ok, i'm just hoping the soda does its job, don't want to strip the head down cos all the bolts are seized, if you could think of anything else that might be the problem, then let me know?? whats the bolt for on the head, just under the second spark plug just to the left? is that in place of an temputure sencer?

That sounds like the hole for the tell tale (see image)

there should be a plastic angle fitting that attaches to a rubber hose, then to the cowling.

yeah that image is deffenently the same, it just has a blank off bolt in there, when i remove it water flows out lovely, but not out of the tell tell at the top of the head, what is ment to be in there, (apart from the bolt)? has someone messed about with this outboard? and could this be some sort of reason that i can't get a good wee??? many many thanks dan

My engine doesn't have a tell tale hole at the top of the block so if it were me I'd remove the hose that comes out of the top and look for a plastic angle fitting that threads into the block.
Change it over to the hole that the bolt from the water jacket is in and put the hose onto it.

as you look at the head so the plugs are facing you, on top of the head to the right is a plastic angle'd fitting, with a rubber pipe going down to the cowling for the tell tale, do you think someone has changed this around for some silly reason? and if i change like you say then shall i just blank off the top tell tale with the same bolt? (if you know what i mean?) if this is ment to be, like you say, then why would somebody change the tell tale to the top?

I don't know why someone would change it; if the bolt (plug) fits then just change it around.
Run the engine for awhile and see how warm it gets.
The tell tale tale is meant to show that water is flowing thru the engine.

thank so much, i will change it around tomorrow and see what happens, it does make sence to me what your saying and hopefully it will sort all my problems out,
just to say that the bolt thats in there does look very new compared to the angled plastic pipe at the top, so i'm now sure someone has changed it around,
but why do you think it would be beneficial for changing it????? or was it some sort of stupid brain wave??

and also, i do get a very faint/week flow from the top tell tale, but nothing like the flow i get from when i remove that bolt,

hello again, i think i've got it all sorted now, it didn't make any difference if i changed the tell tale around cos i ended up haveing to take the head off, it was blocked solid, i should never had trusted the man who sold it to me, i don't think its ever been flushed out in its whole life, still a now have a semi warm outboard with a good tell tale,
