Just bought a used boat, Int. Fiberglass 15' stingray (not sure of the year, can't find any info on it), with a 1975 75hp Johnson. Seemed to run well for the first 10 minutes. Then it started running rough, and a loud squeel started coming from the throttle control box, and it died. sounded like how a spinning starter squeels, but definitely coming out of the throttle box (very loudly!). When turning the key, just a squeel from the contol box, engine wasn't trying to turn over at all. After about 10 minutes, finally managed to get it running, and then everything seemed fine. Any ideas? I don't want this to keep happening out on the water and not know if I'll be getting back in... Thanks

very sure. noise began coming out of the box below the throttle while running, started running rough, some smoke from the engine, then the motor died. When trying to start it again, the noise was a very loud screeching, from the throttle box. Pulled the cover off the engine, absolutely nothing happening in there, no noise, no movement (was watching the starter specifically, nothing). 10 min later, (20+ tries of starting it, finally no screeching, started, and seemed to run fine on the way back to the launch.

Smoke from where? Is the engine overheating? Do u see water coming out the back of the motor like it should?

you've got an overheat alarm sounding in your control box. It's always best to put in a new water pump impeller on a used boat, but you probably should also replace the thermostat as well.
Overheating the motor is extremely bad for it. A must fix before you run it again.
