Re: Helicoil for a '66 20hp

HI all. So I tracked down a "sav-a-thread" kit. It looks like it will work well and apparently you can use it without removing the head. However, it does say to use "high temperature RTV silicone" on the outer threads of the helicoil itself. Does it matter which brand I use? I've seen some red Permatex that looked like it may do the job. Thanks again.

Actually that's what I used. Sorry for the confusion.

hmmm.....Anyone know which would be better, the Hi-Temp RTV silicone vs. Hi-Temp Loctite/threadlocker ? The directions say silicone, but the guy at the store and some folks here say loctite. Thanks again.

Update: after doing a bit more research, I see more and more recommendations for Red Loctite/threadlock than RTV silicone. Makes a bit more sense to be as well. I guess I'm gonna go for it (GULP!). I'm a little freaked out about cutting new threads, but it doesn't seem to bad. I'll try to take pics and post them. Supposed to let the loctite cure for 24 hrs., so I guess I can't actually fire it up until tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Re: Helicoil for a '66 20hp

Update on the update; The surgery seems to have been a success. Once I decided to bite the bullet and go for it there was no going back. After making sure that the piston was at the low point in the cylinder, I got the tap lined up as best I could I started threading the first stage. It was a little scary as I started making my way up to the second, larger stage. However, the aluminum was quite soft and cut wit ease. I made sure to use plenty of lube and removed excess savings along the way. Thankfully, I was able to thread the tap in fully without hitting the piston. I then backed it out slowly and removed any and all debris along the way. I then sprayed a generous amount of lube into each cylinder and gently turned the motor over by hand to cycle out and shavings that may have fallen inside. The newly cut threads were very clean and the motor turned over nicely with no apparent friction. I then chose the appropriate insert from the kit, applied red, Hi-temp loctite to the outer perimeter and gently threaded it flush into place using the spark plug itself to help do the job. After backing out the spark plug, I then used the setting mandrel to seat the knurls of the insert. I then gave it 3-4 good taps with a small sledge hammer, wiped away the small excess of loctite and inspected the job. The insert now sits flush with the outer surface of the head and the motor was able to turn over without issue. Everything looks ok so far (jinx). I'm going to let the loctite cure for 24hrs. per the directions, then give it a shot tomorrow. It seemed almost too easy, which makes me nervous. I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks again for all the help.

Yep, it sounds like things went smoothly as it should. I like Save-A-Thread.
3 years since my repair, and still holding strong.

. I'll keep doing a bit of research and see what's available in town. Do any of you happen to know the thread count of a standard Champion J6C spark pug? Thanks again.

That plug is a 14 mm. Dia thread, pitch is 1.25

Re: Helicoil for a '66 20hp

Latest update: Well the good news is that the helicoil seems to have worked. After I put everything back together I gave the old girl a few good pulls and she fired right up! The spark plugs stayed in and everything :) After the initial smoke cleared, I noticed that it the motor isn't pumping water at all :/ I've dropped the LU several time and inspected the impeller and all looks well. I've even poured water in the t-stat housing and seen it pass out of all of the appropriate passages. The water in the test tank is nice and high as well. The new gaskets seemed to have helped too. The motor now starts with one good pull, cycles though the gears perfectly and idles like a charm, but will not pump water. Any ideas?

Maybe pinched grommet where the water tube connects to the pump housing?

Success! I decided to drop the LU one more time and I sprayed a bit of water in the copper water uptake tube just to make sure it would come out of the exhaust, which it did. I then removed the impeller from the housing found that it was still in great shape and re-installed it. I then reattached the LU and VOILA! it started like a champ and pumped water like it used to! Whew! I was about to have a minor flip out. I think I'm good to go at this point. The motor starts better than ever with no more leaks around the exhaust/head, stops using the kill switch, idles well and pumps plenty of water. I just need to give the head bolts one final toque down. Although, it kinda feels like one of the head bolts may not be able to take the stress :/ , but I'll see. According to the chart posted in my other thread, my 20hp is essentially equivalent to the 18hp Fastwin which has the head bolts listed at 120 in./lbs = 10ft./lbs. Is that correct?

Don't guess, wait for someone who has the exact manual to confirm.

Did you go with the Helicoil 5334-14 kit? My 71 blew a J4C plug out & from what I've read it's the same size.

HI ja. I used a "sav-a-thread" kit that I bought at the local auto parts store. It came with 3 helicoil inserts; a large, medium, and small. I just selected the one that matched the same size as my spark plugs (Champion J6C). I also applied a small amount if red, hi-temp, Loctite to the outer threads of the insert. I'd never installed one before, but it seems to have worked. Its been installed for several days now and I've been able to start, stop and rev the motor without issue. I still haven't made it out on the open water for a WOT run, but I'm confident it will hold. I'll keep y'all posted. Btw, great to have another N.FL iboater! I'm right down the road in Tallahassee.

Re: Helicoil for a '66 20hp

I had a 1955 whisper quiet 25hp. I was going to do a heli coil, but I found a place in Hopatcong NJ that had NOS head for my motor.
This was in 1995. The place is probably still there but I don't remember the name.
I found it before the days of the internet.
At the time the part was $50.
Good luck.

Thankee neighbor. I figured that would work, but the guy at the local parts store said I'd need this one...
Amazon.com: Heli-Coil 554414 M14X1.5 Metric Kit: Automotive

Look like it comes with an extra tool, but not 100% sure if I needed it. Plus it's twice the price.

JaSla, I used the same kit that kfa listed, it worked fine. It is specifically made to do spark plug applications.
