Head with no holding tank, is this illegal?

So I just got a new tuna boat, it has an installed head with no holding tank, just uses raw water to flush and dumps overboard. This is one of those Jabsco Twist and lock manual pump marine toilets.

Is this legal to have on a boat in this setup, with no holding tank? I am aware about laws regarding dumping within 3 miles of shore, and have no intention of breaking those laws. Is it sufficient to secure the head with a padlock on the door to the head while operating in a no dumping zone? Having a hard time finding any information about this.

Not the biggest fan of dumping overboard, but it will likely be used 99.9% of the time for #1 only, if you know what I mean.

Yes, provided you boat in an area that its allowed.
Example, like Ohio river, Mississippi river, Ocean out I forget how many miles

Usually the toilets are plumbed to a holding tank. Is there anything about this toilet that would prevent you from doing so?

Those of us who boat on the Mississippi, however, would really prefer you get a holding tank…

Wouldn't it depend on where in the world you are ?
We have three boats with toilets, two of which are the same type,
In Australia.

Fish poop in the ocean. -----So a bit of #2 does not matter.----Certainly less damaging than all the plastics and " forever " chemicals / medicines that end up in the ocean.

My understanding is that an overboard discharge valve has to have a way to lock it closed.

Even if it is legal is it the right thing to do to dump human feces and other waste into any body of water? I certainly would feel uncomfortable doing so. , and wouldn’t do it. I guess each individual to make that decision.

Best you not travel the ocean or visit 80% of the countries with ocean access, where ALL garbage and waste is dumped in the ocean. That means no cruise for you.

Prince Rupert BC does not have a sewage treatment plant, all waste piped directly off shore.

Victoria BC did the same 30 years ago.----I believe they have a sewage treatment plant now.-----I understand that for many years that the city of NEW YORK put all garbage in bottom opening barges.----Dumped garbage miles off shore.----How many tons a day would that be ?

I’ve been all over the world and I know that to a large extent it is treated as a giant toilet. That still doesn’t make it right or acceptable for anyone to dump sewage into bodies of water. However the shipping industry for the most part has very high standards. The cruise industry has the highest waste and waste water standards in the world. Sewage is cleaned to the point where it actually meets drinking water standards (of course it isn’t drank).

My 1998 boat in great lakes area - during a regular on-water inspection, leo's wanted a closed locked valve on the OEM head discharge line (there is a holding tank). I think in great lakes boating areas, you can't discharge anywhere anytime.

The old cities discharge raw sewage as part of overflow events and combined sewer systems - the cities (we) just pay big fines.

Thats only for the big lines that are touting it for their public image and those serving 1st world countries.
Many smaller lines and those in non woke parts of the world still dump raw sewage. Documented year after year.

Think of it as adding other tasty nutrients to the ocean/sea critters normal diet.

You'll sleep better.

And a flushing toilet is much, much more civilized than having a bog in a bucket and then chucking the large chunky bits over the side.

Holding tanks aren't a major investment and certainly the right call nearshore and inshore.
