Re: Head Gasket Sealer for pitted block

Finally found my replacement bolts and set out this morning to put things back together and test it out. I hit a snag while tightening the head down when I found that my newly chased threads in the #6 hole stripped out with little torquing....off to Harbor Freight for a helicoil set. I helicoiled that hole and then picked up where I left off. Permatex Indian Head Gasket Shellac on the block and head surfaces (no shellac on the cylinder seals), Permatex antiseize on the bolt threads- in three passes (6 ft/lb, 12 ft/lb and 19 ft/lb) I torqued it down. Reconnected everything and put it on the muffs.

Started great and normal-idled immediately, but high at 1000rpm- great pee stream....but I got a heat warning about 2 minutes into the idle, so I shut it down. Both cylinder heads were too hot. Water hoses from the t-stats were warm, the pee stream was warm, so the water seemed to be circulating. T-stats were fine before I yanked the starboard head.

Any thoughts?

Ran through my cooling checklist. I assumed the thermostats were stuck closed, so I removed both water hoses and saturated the thermostats with WD40. I also used some compresses air through the thermostat housing and it flushed through both cylinder heads. After reconnecting the water hoses to the the tstats I put the muffs back on and started the engine- water was gushing through the hoses, so I reconnected them to the cylinder heads and cranked it up....temp started rising so I shut it down, but then I heard a sound that may have been the tstats opening....so I started it up again, a voila! The heads started cooling and the idle dropped back down to normal- around 800. AND.... when I pulled the plugs, no water! Running great now! Next test will be in the water.

You're asking for trouble with those crappy sticking thermostats.:(

other than that, good work so far.

Re: Head Gasket Sealer for pitted block

Just to bring closure to this thread, I finally in-water tested the motor yesterday. After easy startup, my handy Harbor Freight pocket thermometer showed that my heads and block never ran above 140 degrees and it idled perfectly. Motored out to the river and ran for 2 hours, half of which was WOT. Boat ran great, plugs look great on all four. Thanks for all the help on this one.
