having trouble replacing lower unit after impeller replacement

Yes, I did it . I did not have the shift lever in the right spot when I dropped the lower unit. Can anyone help me on how to get everything back as it should be. 60 hp Mariner serial OB299212 I think around an 88 model. Also I replaced the impeller last year and is bad again this year. The inside of pump(plastic) seems gummy and I am thinking of replacing all pump parts or can they be cleaned. Thanks John

The water pump bodies have a stainless liner. If you do not have one, you need to get a new pump upper.

I like to set the control and gearcase to neutral. Grease both splines, and shove the driveshaft into the midsection, with the motor tilted all the way up. Mate up the copper watertube with the plastic pipe. Now rotate the flywheel by hand until the drivesahft splines mate with the crank. You can usually mate up the shift shaft with a needle nose plier.
