Just finished dropping the lower unit again and this last time I found drive oil on the drive shaft and on the water pump housing. From what I've read in other posts, it sounds like a messed up the upper seal during the re-install. What kind of effort time wise, difficulty, any special tools, etc am I looking at to those that have replaced the upper seal. Also, has anyone had this done in the past by a shop and remember how much is cost?

5.0 LX, Alpha 1 Gen 2 (thanks Bt)

One more question, would a broken upper seal lead to water intrusion, the drive oil looked fine (I only had about an hour or two of time on it in this condition).

Thanks

The upper splines on the Gen II boxes is fed with gear oil. You will always get quite a lot of oil come down when you split them, even after you've drained the oil out. It's quite a messy job and almost impossible to stop that oil going everywhere. (I know, I've tried!)

Sounds to me like you've got a very normal situation there. :D
