Have to pump bulb to keep running... What do I do?

I have a 90's model Gamefisher 15 hp. It has run great for the year that I have owned it. I took it out yesterday and fished all day and it did fine. Today I took it out and started up river and after about 2 minutes it died. It would start back up and idle but when I put it in forward it died every time. I messed with it for an hour before I gave up. Later today I messed with it and found that if I pumped the bulb real hard and fast when I put it in forward, it would run good. So I thought that my bulb or line was bad, so I replaced them, but the problem was the same. If I pump the bulb when I put it in forward it will run good for a while then die. If I keep pumping it it runs good. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be????

Its the fuel pump diaphram.,cheap and easy fix,get a new diaphram,split the fuel pump and replace it,put pump back together in reverse procedure of taking it apart,its is only a flat piece of rubber!

Can you help me find where the fuel pump and diaphragm are? I have looked around on it and found the fuel filter but other than that I'm not sure what's what.

coach;

In the link I sent you for the parts, look under Fuel and Recirculation System. Item 23 is a screw which attaches 24 (Fuel pump cover) to 31 (Transfer port cover) All the parts between the fuel pump cover and the transfer port cover form the fuel pump assembly.

To rebuild the pump you will need item 30 (Gasket and Diaphram kit) and I would order gasket 25 as well.

I hope this is not too confusing.

ok, I took the fuel pump apart and found the diaphragm, but it looked to be in one piece with no holes or tears in it. Do you still think that this is the problem? shoule i still replace the diaphragm?

At $8-10, I wouldn't hesitate to change them as you will know for sure that the fuel pump should be good for a few years.

Yes. Go ahead and replace it. I'm having a very similar issue. The diaphrams appear to be ok, but I have proven that the pump is not pumping any fuel. I bought a rebuild kit from iboats a few days ago for less than $10. It's a very cheap investment and it is certainly worth rebuilding the pump for that much.

Rely on those parts diagrams and take pics as you disassemble the pump. Either will help you to get it apart and rebuild it with little trouble.

Best of luck! Keep us posted. :)

Well I ordered the parts today to replace the diaphragm. Hopefully that will fix the problem. I will post on here how it goes. Thanks for all the help!

I hope that works out for you. There's nothing like being on the water and having to get out and push! I say that from experience! :)

Re: Have to pump bulb to keep running... What do I do?

Well I ordered the parts, and replaced them with no problem. But when I went to hook the fuel line back to the fuel pump, the end of the line cracked like it was dry rotted. So I got some hose at the small engine shop in town for $1.80 a foot. I replaced with no problem and just tried the motor in a tub and it works great. Hopefully it will work great this weekend on the water. I don't know if it was the fuel line or diaphragm giving me the troubles the whole time, or a combo of both, but it looks to b fixed now. Thanks for all the help!

I would of started with replacing the ball first thing. Todays gas eats them up.

I did replace the ball first. It was fine. That is when I replaced the fuel pump diaphragm and then the fuel line inside the motor.
