Hi all,
Finally getting around to starting a very old project that's been sitting behind my house for far too long now. Old boat (old Starcraft islander) with an OMC stringer and some old (I think 4 cylinder) motor. I have no idea if they run. They ran a long time ago, but after sitting for so long, I bet they don't run. I doubt they're seized or anything but can't imagine they would just fire up.
In any case, my project has always been to get rid of the OMC stuff and put a mercruiser drive on there, and at this point, I'll need to rebuild the transom anyways. So my question is, what should I do with the motor and drive? It's still in the boat and I would happily buy a hoist but I don't have one already, and it's still installed in the boat, so it's not like it's all just neatly packed on a pallet somewhere
Is it just scrap? Is it possible useful or valuable to people who are still running OMCs? If it's the kind of thing I should be selling on craigslist, great, I can do that. If it would fetch less than a couple hundred bucks, it's probably not worth my time to sell it, but then is this the kind of thing people might need for parts and would come take it out of the boat? Or am I better off just like buying/borrowing a hoist and taking it out myself and taking it to the scrap yard, because genuinely nobody would want it or any parts off of it?
My big worry is that I just scrap it, but I know these things are old and what happens if someone needs some odd part some day? If the best course of action is to just scrap it, are there parts that are reasonably easy to remove that tend to be the rare parts that someone might need in the future? I'll happy spend a hour or two pulling parts and storing them (within reason) and just send them out to anyone who needs them in exchange for shipping costs, but only if most of the engine should be scrapped but there are a few hard-to-find pieces that are likely to be helpful in the near future.
Anyways: no promises that I get to this any time soon, but I feel a little motivated, so... please tell me what the best course of action is in terms of an old, probably out of commission OMC Stringer Drive + motor please! Thanks!!
