"Have a nice day"...

This is what we get when leaving a convenience store, a boating supply store, a grocery store, etc.

Got it this afternoon when leaving a Menards store with a gallon of satin white to be applied to the garage door and framing.

Now I find this a bit innocuous, don't you? "Have a nice day" when I'm walking out with a can of paint. What kind of a day am I expected to have when I'm leaving with a can of paint?

Yeah, I appreciate the good wishes, but if she really meant it, wouldn't she be over at my place helping me?

I have heard that salutation many times when leaving a store - often given by a young, nubile woman, or sometimes by an older, mature and beautiful grandma. In each case I think, "Oh how I'd like to have a beautiful rest-of-the-day - with you!".

But, as you might suspect, I always go home alone, with my can of paint - say hello to the dog, think of what might have been.

Sometimes life seems unfair, hey? Oh well; at least the garage door looks good.

Geez... Who p!$$&d on your Cheerios?

If she said nothing, would you consider her anti-social?
She was being polite. Something that's lost in today's society, especially in customer service.

A hobo, a bit down on his luck, hits town and figures that he might make a few dollars painting.
He spends his last $12- on a can of paint and a brush and starts knocking on doors in an upscale neighbourhood looking for a client.
The door of one stately home was answered by a cardigan-clad, pipe-smoking type.
"I admire your initiative in seeking a hand-up rather than a hand-out. I'll pay you $100- to paint my porch....it's around the back of the house".
About an hour and a half later the hobo knocks on the door again.
"Well boss, I'm done. I'll just have the $100- and be off.....and by the way, just so ya know, it's not a Porch.... it's a Buick. Have a nice day"

I'm thinkin' that under the "Have a Nice Day" umbrella, that not spilling any paint and getting good coverage would make for a nice day of painting, maybe that is what they meant to say but could not convey all that in the short time it took you to walk by.

Salutation: 'Have a nice day!'
Generator's Response: 'You can't tell me what to do!'

Really, guy- it beats the surly teenager at Burger King!

right about now I'm feeling sorry for his dog.LOL

Bet he's hiding in the corner afraid to drop a deuce for fear it might interrupt generator's "nice day" course he could learn how to bark a muffled "have a nice day" as Generator picks it up

Re: "Have a nice day"...

Most stores force their employees to say things like "how are you today?" or "have a nice day". It doesn't bother me that these people say this stuff and don't really care at all. What pisses me off is when I respond in a normal way, and they don't respond back like they're not even paying attention to me. Example: they say, "How are you today?" and I say, "Good, how about yourself?". Then they don't respond or say something to someone else and then start ringing stuff up. I usually look at them and say "Oh, that good huh? Nice to know", where they get some blank stare on their face and say "have a nice day" as I'm walking off with me stuff. If you're going to be fake with your comments because your place of work makes you do it 1000 times per day, at least pretend like the words came out of your mouth and were directed at a living person. :)

Sincerity is kind of lost in today's world. It is my opinion that words are often spoke with little meaning. One word that has completely lost meaning is "I'm sorry". After you hear it 10,000 times, it stops having any value and becomes one of those words like "umm". That may be what the first poster was thinking and trying to say.

Re: "Have a nice day"...

Well, I began the thread and I guess I'll end it.

It's nice that they do that. Some of them even mean it - look you in the eye and connect with you when they say it. They really want you to have a nice day...

(But me, nasty old b_st_rd that I am, always think, "If you're really serious, you could make it an unforgettable day..!)

Then I shuffle out with can of paint (or stack of 2/4's or bag of pipe fittings, etc.), get into my truck alone, drive my pitiful self back to the house where the dog ignores me, and I find the guy to whom I owe $1500 and am behind on the payments waiting for me in my driveway with three other guys I don't owe money to but who appear to have an interest in the situation.

So now I'm in big trouble, when all I wanted was to be hugged.

Re: "Have a nice day"...

Reminds me of a George Carlin rant of "have a nice day".

"What if I dont want to have a nice day .. what if, just if, Ive had 100 nice days in a row and now im ready for a crappy day. Wouldnt that be nice.. someone says "Have a crappy day" ? Well thank you and to you and your wonderful family as well." :D
