have a lower unit removal question!!

hey guys im replacing the impeller on my 94 johnson 30hp outboard and im having issues getting the lower unit off, i have it about an inch drop so far, and did some research and found there is a nut on the shifter rod you have to loosen but, my question is how to get to that the rod?

You need to take the side covers (they should be black) off of the lower unit (the screens the water gets sucked up through. There should be one on each side, and a couple of bolts holding them together. Pull those off, and there will be your shift rod with the nut. Back the nut off, and the unit should drop out.

After you get the coupling seperated you'll have to spread the little black retainer on the shift rod and remove that also.
