Hello and welcome to iboats.

I'm going to assume the engine is the same year as the hull (not always the case) and that it's a Mercruiser (also, not always the case)...

The problem is likely to be the trim limit switch, and the fix is to replace it. The short-term fix is to short it out, but that carries a small risk... Here's a diagram showing the wiring. Just remove the limit switch connections from the harness and put in a shorting wire.

Replacing the switch is a proper pain. Not difficult, just a pain. The kit is both the limit switch and the position sender, and their wires, and you really do need to replacement as a pair, and as a complete kit. Some people have tried cutting and soldering wires, but that doesn't work for long.

The complete kit is Merc part '-805320A03 Power Trim Sender kit', but it's not cheap... I wouldn't bother with the cheap aftermarket jobbies either. Unfortunately their QC isn't great, and a 50% DOA rate it's unheard of (they're cheap for a reason!)

so someone said to change the up selinoid which i did and no change then mistakenly attached a wire to positive post on battery which should have been on negative post. It was a red wire and now have nothing. no up down or trailering. now what do I do. can,t even take motor up to bring in to get fixed by certified people

Idiots! The 'UP' and the 'TRAILER' use the same solenoid! If TRAILER works, then the solenoid is fine!

There's very little in the circuit that could be destroyed, apart from the fuse. Check that.. But there shouldn't be any red wire on a negative ternimal (unless a previous person has been in there changing wires around).

thats the number on the red wire I put on positive terminal that caused the problem

And it was originally on the negative terminal? I'd be stripping all the wiring out and setting it back to standard! And Merc wires aren't numbered. Only CAT do that rubbish! (that I know of)
