You guys been getting any media coverage about Harry and a TV show he went on down here?
Take my word for it. It's all fun!!
I feel sorry for Harry.
Think he found himself in an impossible position (like others involved too), and he had to think on his feet real quick....and you never get things right when you do that.....damned if he did...damned if he didn't......(and that applies to the others involved too).
What's going on up your way?
Our media....well the ones that seek drama in a incident.....are stating you people are outraged.
Cheers

Outraged? Haven't heard a word about it.
All we hear about is the middle east war, bad economy and healthcare reform. Nothing good in the news lately.... I almost forgot the swine flu, I mean H1N1 virus....

Re: Harry Cronnick Jnr down-under

I'm not outraged..didnt even know...maybe folks are more outraged by Harry's remark after the apology....
--------
Connick said he would not have appeared on the show if he'd known about the skit.

"I just want to say, on behalf of my country, I know it was done humorously, but we've spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that we take it really to heart," he told Somers after his apology.

--------

I dont think Harry meant to say that...in those words....if one knows Harry's story.
Your right that we Americans are outraged though....but its because of a real buffoon and his followers...

I would have been outraged had that skit been on a USA show and I sympathize with Mr. Connick's outrage. It would have started riots in many US cities.

I think in his position I would have done the same thing. The skit ridiculed the Jackson Five and Michael in particular.

It would have to improve a lot to simply be BAD taste.

On the other hand the Oz culture may be where the white US culture was 60-70 years ago, where the portrayal of persons of color as bufoons and developmentally challenged was standard fare. If that is the case Harry's complaint should be aimed at the Oz culture and not one particular manifestation of it.

Re: Harry Cronnick Jnr down-under

It was a most strange situation.
This show is not rehearsed....no canned applause or laughter....it is off the cuff live....and humor is flying thick and fast....it goes for 2hrs....well.... it always over runs its time.
Harry has appeared many times and he has copped a bit of stick, and given his share out too.
He is well suited to it, but it has promoted his music and tours down-under too.

Anita and I were watching and we thought it was a tribute to MJ in a humorous way.
They did a good job....sounded great....audience were clapping along etc....everyone was getting in to it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmaF7Pys7OI

Had you asked me what the term 'black faces' meant 2 days ago....I have never heard it before in my life.
Daryl had never hear of it either....I understand someone on Harry's side had to explain the term to everyone backstage.

Think the problem is....Harry recognized immediately where this skit would leave him back home, and he had to jump quickly.
No body else thought it any more than a humorous tribute the J 5.
That was how it was introduced!!

Then all the PC's got in on the act wanting a crucifixion, but then the remainder revolted to the point the polls show 80% of Aussies had a gutsfull and couldn't see any racisms.

The TV and news channels are all being very careful....creating a story to sell a paper isn't going to work here.

Read the 4th to last sentence in the Drs letter below...that's how life is here.

It is a really difficult situation and Harry is in the middle....he has to go home.....we don't!....we are ok....he's not.

A couple of stupid politicians called the show 'disgusting' yesterday, and today probably wish they had kept their mouths shut.
I don't think Aussies think they are racist....they judge people how they find them.
Below is the response from the MJ impersonator.
Cheers
Phillip

Twenty years ago myself and five friends painted our faces black and performed the Jackson Jive skit on Hey Hey It?s Saturday to great acclaim.

Two nights ago we did exactly the same skit and we?ve been pilloried for it.

It?s no defence to say that we didn?t think it wouldn?t have caused offence, because we?re all grown men now, not uni students, and we should have known better.

Nor is it a defence to point out that we?re actually not white men dressing up as black men, but a group of mainly coloured men dressing up as black men, because as ethnic Australians we should have known better ourselves.

We?ve made a public apology for what we did. So why DID we do it?

We went on Hey Hey because it was the 20th anniversary of us doing the skit at the University of Sydney Medical Revue, which led to us going on Hey Hey in the first place.

A couple of months ago we were asked back to do the same skit at this year?s Medical Revue, which we did. The recent passing of Michael Jackson probably gave the skit some currency as well.

So when we saw Hey Hey was doing a reunion show we sent in the DVD of our old performance as an audition. Channel Nine loved it and asked us to do the skit again.

We?re not so naive that we didn?t think it would be a little bit controversial to paint our faces black. We discussed it before the show.

But to be honest, we thought that we didn?t get any complaints 20 years ago, and we didn?t get any complaints two months ago at the Med Revue, so we figured it was probably all in good fun.

We all underestimated what the reaction would be, but in the end it was our decision to go on air dressed the way we did. The worst consequence of what we did is that the skit has raised the question of are Australians racist.

We?re genuinely horrified that our mistake could cause people to think that.

Out of the six of us, only one is Anglo-Celtic Australian. I?m Sri Lankan-Australian, there?s an Indian Australian, a Greek Australian, an Irish-Italian Australian and a Lebanese Australian. We?re all Australian.

Apart from the odd joke when I was at school, I?ve never been subject to racism in Australia. In other countries, certainly, but never here.

I think the fact that all six of us have gone onto very successful careers as doctors demonstrates the fact that Australians care more about ability than race.

Not to justify what we did, but one of the best things about Australia is the ability to laugh at ourselves.

But if what happened to us forces someone to think about whether they?re being racist or offensive before they make a similar comment or performance (especially one in front of a national television audience), then at least we may have extracted a modicum of good out of this.

Yup, doesn't make any sense to me either.

Was their this type of media uproar when Tropic Thunder was released? A white dude playing a black dude with an aussie accent in a comedy movie.

I saw the offending comedy skit, I taped it and watched it again tonight. My first impression was that it was a TRIBUTE to a great entertainer and his family.

It saddens me to hear JB say that it would cause riots if aired in the U.S.

It is a sad thing, Dunaruna, that so-called "political correctness" has become a criticism of sincere attempts to show respect for ideas that one might not share.

We Yanks (in this case that includes Texicans) carry a lot of baggage about our institutionalized suppression and trivialization of persons of color for hundreds of years. That baggage is guilt. . .even in those who had no personal involvement other than allowing it to continue so long without interfering.

Slavery and the third class citizenship that followed are not unique to the US, but may be unique to a country that trumpets the equality of all and personal freedom of all at every opportunity.

That hypocrisy is not completely dead, but we want it dead and gone with a consuming passion.

I think we can be forgiven a few hipshots at reminders of the second greatest crime against humanity in human history.

Re: Harry Cronnick Jnr down-under

Oh come on. All this nonsense about it being "one-sided" and just a bit of harmless fun is ridiculous. What's causing the trouble is not just the blackface. It's the stereotypes involved--happy smiling "darkies" dancing and singing--that causes a problem. The examples you use just prove this point. No, Tropic Thunder didn't cause a problem, because it didn't get a laugh from demeaning people of color. Imitation is fine. Dehumanizing racist parody is not.

Can you actually look at this and say it's a loving and respectful portrayal of the African-American culture that produced this type of music in the '70s? Can you say that it's a respectful and accurate portrayal of the physical and cultural characteristics of African-Americans? Basically, it's people in another country making fun of people from America because of the color of their skin and their "simplicity." It makes an ugly statement: "Look what those silly Negroes used to do!! What a bunch of dopes."

African-Americans have a history of being ridiculed for the color of their skin. White Americans do not. It's silly to try to reverse this saying that a black actor can do whatever he wants just because he can imitate a white man. You want a good comparison? What if Wayne Brady dressed up like an Irishman and pretended he was alcoholic and abusive toward his wife? How would that go over? It's not about the color of a person's skin. It's about ridiculing an entire group of people based on a hurtful stereotype.

Let's clarify that. As the population as a whole goes, it's only a tiny minority(no pun intended). The way the media hyped his death you would have thought a country's leader had passed. When another country does something we don't like, we get our undies in a bundle like all of a sudden we never have done anything wrong. We have done alot worse throughout the years. This country has way too much to worry about than how someone else portrays the "self proclaimed" king of pop.

I don't think this country was concerned about how someone else protrayed the "king" of pop -- only the down-under media. Most folks here didn't know jack about what went on. You're complaining about a red herring.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, that's exactly the point I was making... Maybe you're just agreeing with me...:)

Re: Harry Cronnick Jnr down-under

To add a bit of historical context, there were minstrel shows in America that were popular through the 1800s to the early part of the 20th Century. These shows featured white performers in blackface who sang, danced and acted in simpleminded, goofy ways using exaggerated stereotypes to get laughs from the audience. This is considered an embarrassing and shameful part of our history.

I'm just pointing that out because the roots of white people performing in blackface being considered a Very Bad Thing go a lot deeper than "it's rude to make fun of the Jackson 5, or black people in general". I think this is something our Aussie friends simply don't realize, not having the same history of slavery and difficult race relations.

I'm sure Australia isn't in the dark about slavery or race relations, just ask the aborigines.
