After about a year of kicking ideas around I FINALLY got it together and built a hard top for my 1971 SLICKRAFT SS-235. I saw a factory HT and hated that it was only 49 inches from the cockpit sole, USELESS for a 6 footer like myself. The inside height is now 79 inches from floor to the lowest part of the crossmember.

I made the frame from 2 inch O.D. schedule 40 aluminum pipe, and the top from a laminate of 1/4 inch douglas fir marine grade ply and fiberglass.

I had the pipe bent to match the inside angles of the gunwale and sole bolster. I got it bent at a muffler shop in town. I hand polished the pipe to as much as aluminum can look like chrome.

The joint hardware came from a fence supply firm and is locked into place with set screws. I didn't like that so drilled and tapped the fittings for 1/4-20 and bolted it from the inside. I cut starboard and made a spacers for the whole top inside edge to compensate for the fittings depth upon installation. I caulked both sides and the front top to prevent spray from getting in there.

I painted the tops outside with 4 coats of one parts ployeurethane enamel porch paint brilliant white. The top is attached with 1/4 20 bolts tapped through the top into tapped holes in the aluminum frame and presealed with 5200. The top has curved edges and a bow to shed water. The bow is 2.5 inches max in the middle. I also built a drip adge at the back of the tops edge to shed water off to the sides.

I don't have a URL for my pics, maybe I can find a way to get them on later...

Yes, please get some pictures- I want to do something like that so bad I can't stand it. I built a leaning post for my CC earlier this year and I've dreamt about creating a T-Top for it. I was wondering how it would look with joints and fittings as opposed to all welded. I don't want it to look like a home built deal.

Sounds great- I want to see it.

UFM82

Re: hard top completed!

you guys and your sand beaches and clear water are killin me. Man...that looks great (he says as he tugs his boat toward the always muddy Missouri River) Nice pics.

I tried to add a pic of where I put my boat in the water but all I got was the dreaded red X in the square box. Haven't got it figured out yet.

Re: hard top completed!

OK Guys,

Here are the pics and the description that santa666 sent:

"Ok, Been busy, but here's a picture. This is the completed frame and the top
mocked up in high density polystyrene pink insulation foam."

1.jpg

"Next is a trial fitting of the frame on the boat with the foam mock-up top
atached. Tthe pipe running under the foam is establish the bow in the
roofline so the rain and spray will roll off the sides instead of into the
cabin. The cabin peak from that pipe is 2.5 inches."

3.jpg

"The last picture for today is of the hard top itself. It is 1/4 inch douglas
fir marine grade plywood with a layer of fiberglass on top. Each edge is
chamfered. The edges are built to drip over the gunwale drip channel. The
front and back are radiused and the corners are rounded."

2.jpg

"I am loading all of the pictues as well as many diagrams into a document
that explains step by step how to design and build a hard top. I am
including all of the names of the suppliers for parts as well.

Instead of sending this information out piece-meal in e-mails I am combining
it in an all-inclusive package that I am going to offer for sale for a
modest price. I spent about 18 months in R&D as well as construction and
feel the DIY crowd will be well ahead learning from my experience (and
mistakes!) This isn't my job, its just that I put SO MUCH effort into it."

All the above text was emailed to me from santa666 today. Enjoy.

Thanks for the pics santa666!

-Linc33

Re: hard top completed!

Ahhh. Now I understand why I didn't understand your original description, Santa666. I was thinking a removable hard top like old boats had, not center console! LOL!

Nonetheless, very, very nice work. I hope you are as successful marketing your project as you were making it. Nothing wrong with making the projects pay for themselves. I did it with the emblems for my brand boat. Sell them on e-bay as I have time to make them. You might try auctioning the plans off there too. Doesn't cost much and you get an idea of what the demand for your product is.

Good luck.

Re: hard top completed!

Good question about the pipe. It is avaiable nationwide. Just google aluminum pipe and your town name. It will give search results for metal companies in your area.

A word of caution- make sure to get the fittings first and fit the pipe to it as there are dozens of pipe diameters and only a couple of fittings manufacturers that make this stuff in 1-1/4, 1-1/38, and 2 inch.

I bought a sample fitting that I knew I'd need and then took it to my local metals supply company to test fit IN PERSON the fiting and the pipe for a proper fit BEFORE ordering more of either.

SO, the real question should be what fitting do I NEED to fit the pipe size I WANT to build with. Bigger boats (mine is 23') need a 2" to "match". A 17' runabout may visually "need" a smaller fitting and pipe set...

To shortcut the next question I got the fittings from www.academyfence.com
