Sure sounds like the choke isn't closing all the way or staying closed when you crank it.

Should be an easy retrofit.----Installed these units on inline 6 Mercury motor .----Then no more hard to start problems.

I'm not going to be much help here but I had an 85 HP motor just like yours that acted the same way. I tried about everything from carb rebuilds, spark plugs, fuel pump etc. and never got it off of the starting fluid. I'm pretty sure I tried the manual choke also. It would start the rest of the day after I used starting fluid the first time. The lower unit finally went out on it so I replaced it with a 140 of the same vintage. If I ever try to do anything with this motor I'm going to look into the electric primers as mentioned. How do you install these primers? Where are they wired into?

Step # 1 would be to learn how the primer works.----And instead of the single wire going to a mechanical linkage choke solenoid , the wire goes to the electric primer valve.----No wiring modification needed.---The fuel line from pump to carburetors needs a T to supply fuel pressure to the solenoid.--And the wee fuel lines from the primer need to have a place to spray fuel into the engine.----Originally done at the bypass covers and later at a nipple installed on the carburetors.----Fairly simple in my opinion.

Have to note that whatever you do, the primer nipples have tiny tiny holes. About 0.020".

Special "thanks" to all you guys for your input!!! It did turn out to be a choke plates not staying completely closed with the key pushed in. From the steering wheel it looked good, but when I went back to the motor and physically touched the plates I could feel a slight gap. And that's all it took. Thanks again guys!!!
