hard to start 6hp johnson

having trouble starting motor , start after 7or 8th time , run and starts perfect the rest of the day, can squirt a small amount of gas in sparkplug hole, starts right up. thanks fox

It sounds like a choke problem. Be sure the choke is closing properly.Be sure you squeeze the primer bulb till firm.If it refuses to start well give the carb a rebuild with special attention to jets and passages.

thanks for the comeback , i have went though the carb,new plugs check the bulb and lines, the only thing that i have dought with is the long stim in the center of carb that is verical, possible going to the reserval where the float is . is this a jet? the choke is closing correctly. any help will be appreciated thanks fox

The first Johnson 6HP was 1926, Why don't you give us a little more information?

A lot of the 6HP carburetors have a tube running up from the float bowl into the carburetor throat that is the high speed nozzle.

It would be good if we had the year,but speaking generically
I think your refering to the high speed nozzle.If motor runs normally its hard to believe it won't start off the choke.Have you tried your hand over the intake?
There might be an air leak between the choke and the motor,a missing soft plug on the carb body bad carb gasket etc of course these things would make it run strangely as well.You can squirt gas into the carb to start as well but be careful gas fumes can be treacherous.
