I'm new to Mercury I have a 82 150 Black Max that will start cold every time with one shot of the choke button everytime, but when you put the motor up in the trailer position, it won't start but a "whiff" of ether a 1 second shot it fires fast and starts and it fine for the rest of the day.........Any clues what to look for I think it's a carb problem....

Re: Hard starting after trailering position

ether is the best way to burn a hole in a piston. if you must, use a spray or squeeze bottle of premix gas. when the engine is in the tilt position the carb drain out the overflow. thus starting should be pump the bulb till hard, turn over a couple of times and repump the bulb to fill the carb bowl, now choke and start.

Never use starting fluid!!! It won't live long if you do. Prime real good or use a pre mix.

Re: Hard starting after trailering position

You are starting a 2 cycle engine which requires oil with the fuel to lube critical components.

I know they say they put lube in ether cans because they used to kill 4 cycles too, but I agree not to use it in your engine.

I don't use it in my diesel tractors unless I absolutely have to and Deere and co built a mount and tube on my tractors specifically to insert ether.

Re: Hard starting after trailering position

Thanks I just threw out the ether It was just a 1 second "whiff" not a soaking . I also put the motor in the trailer position and I'm going to try the the technic that tashasdaddy posted i'll try it in a hour or so. I alway had OMC this is my first Merc I like the performace but not the choke system... Thanks for the help....Ted

Well it fired right up with just one push of the choke. I'll leave up over night and try it tommorrow and see what happens.......

Re: Hard starting after trailering position

FYI I was just over at www.seafoam.com and they said that it was permissible to use Deep Creep (Sea Foam in a can) for 2 cycle engine starting. Seems it was specifically designed for OMC engines. I know in my chain saws after treating them with seafoam thru the carb and spark plug hole, and letting them sit for a few minutes, they fired right up as did my 4 cycle old lawn mower.
