Hard start

Just bought a 91 bayliner capri. Outdrive is new, carbs been rebuilt, etc... started up immediately when last owner cranked it over when I bought it. Brought it home and takes quite a few tries before it starts. When cranked, you can hear the engine want to start but then stops. Takes a few times to finally turn over and start. The fuel line doesn't have an inline filter on it and I'm wondering if this could possibly be allowing the fuel to run back into tank and not stay in line, which could possibly be the culprit? Assuming not enough fuel pumped into line. Any help would be appreciated. After it's started, there zero problems with it. Runs beautifully. Appreciate it in advance.

What motor and what is your starting procedure.-----Fact----Many folks today are not fully versed in starting procedures.
3.0 merc. Not really to familiar on a startup procedure for it. My friend yesterday suggested to put the control in forward and pump it a couple times. Only pumped it twice. Had same issue. Maybe needed to pump it more?

Push the throttle only button and pump it fully twice. Now pull throttle back to a position just above neutral, for a fast idle and crank it over. If that doesn't work well enough, remove the spark arrestor and look at the carb's choke plate. It should closed with a cold engine. There is an adjustment on it.

I would be checking the carburetor Choke adjustments. ONLY
Depending on the carburetor on the engine. Gasket on the Accelerator pump that prevents cold engine stalls a lot.

Any working correctly fuel pump..........Will never drain back into the gas tank. You will never see primer bulbs on inboard engines from a company. Ever see the primers on any car ? Never
Primer bulbs ARE ARE handy on LONG fuel lines. With hand pull starting. (y)
