hard or no start

1969 johnson 55 horse electric shift.has spark and fuel . only seems to want to start just as the key goes back to run position or not at all

Use a timing light to see if its getting spark when in crank position (key switch).

If no, disconnect kill wire, black/yellow , and see if spark returns.

If no, disconnect main harness and jump the starter to crank it and see if spark returns.

If yes, keyswitch is probably worn out.

Ignition switches are a common wear item.
