Happy 4th of July!

It was on July 2nd, 1776, that the Continental Congress convened at the Pennsylvania State House (later called Independence Hall) in Philadelphia. A delegate from Virginia, Richard Lee had made a motion on June 7th calling for America’s independence from Britian. There was a heated debate and a 5 member team was selected to draw up the Colonies grievances with Britian. On July 2nd, in a near unanimous vote (the delegation from New York abstained from voting) the motion passed. On July 4th, the Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence which was largely written by Thomas Jefferson.



Did you know that John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826—the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Jefferson was a wealthy lawyer, landowner and well respected member of America's lawmaking society when he penned a majority of the Declaration in (mostly) solitude. A voracious reader, he understood a vast array of social, political and grass roots ideas. Articulate with any person on seemingly any subject his true gift was listening and understanding which led many to "let him run free" with his authorship of the Declaration. He was 33 years old at the time

Personally, this begs the question as to why America's three executive branches of government are composed largely by persons over the age of 50 with seemingly little if any idea about society's current zeitgeist. I like to belive Jefferson felt so strongly about what he and others were doing it led him to bouts of emotional outbursts. I know I have had such an experience on occasion and hope others with means may be able to comprehend today's and our future's path towards a wholly understanding society
