The chances of the replacement hand wheel, bolt, and spring fitting that old of a coupler are slim, while it may work it's not likely going to be 100%. Buy a hacksaw and a new coupler.
Measure the width of the tongue tubing, buy the right coupler to match. Drill the two holes needed to match the tongue. The new coupler will fit snugly up onto the trailer tongue, the forward of the two holes will end up roughly an inch from the cut edge of the tongue.
Buy good quality bolts, grade 8 is preferred and use Nylock style nuts on the bolts. When tightening the bolts down, you don't want to go so tight that it crushes the tubing or the new coupler.
If it were a galvanized trailer, then you may not want to drill into the frame, but that's not galvanized, or at least it's not any more by the looks of it. You could also take the new coupler to a welder and have them weld the new on right on. Try the local muffler shop or gas station, most have welders on hand. With the proper tools its a 15 minute job.

A lever type coupler is far safer and easier to use, those hand wheel types are a royal pain to use, and I've seen plenty of them with bad levers and springs which in turn lets them come loose on the road. I've cut dozens of them off over the years.

Ki Ki. you are hard headed. just put a regular coupler on that trailer. and save yourself alot of headaches. AND GO BOATING. Quit F000king around.
Those hand wheel things where the biggest piece of crap. that is why you never see them any more.
And the are not collector Items

Alright gang. Going to buy a hacksaw today and a 1/2 inch drill bit, only have 3/8 at home. I believe the bolts are 1/2" wide, correct?

Also, one concern is the bolts where the safety chains are. I suppose I'll need to move those back as well. Do they make couplers with the safety chains attached or do I need to drill new safety chain holes into the trailer if I put in a new coupler? I'm not sure if the new safety chain location will be the coupler location or not... Ughhh, wish I were more mechanically inclined aka less stupid with this stuff.

KiKi, what part of Michigan do you live. I would be willing to bet that there is an iboats member that lives within a short distance of your location that would be willing to come over and help you get this taken care of.

I would say its not adequate. That's why they don't make them any more.

Fulton still makes one.
You can buy rebuild kits all day from online retailers for $20 or less.
But Ki-KI wants to buy off ebay for $32
go figure.

Buy one of these.
Then you do not have to buy any tools or drill any holes nor cut anything off.

If i lived anywhere near this guy, I would drive there today and cut the coupler off myself! But I live in Arkansas, so that rules me out........

After you cut off the old coupler, drill a hole up from the bottom about an inch into the tubing. That's were most of my factory set up trailers have their safety chains attached.
You will need another 1/2" bolt to attach the safety chains, probably about 2.5" long with a couple of big washers and a Nylock nut.

Re: Hand-Wheel to Lever, simple switch? Things to know?

One more question...

I'm going to replace the safety chains. The guy before has little tiny chains on the trailer that are rusted. Will a safety chain, such as this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007LVJGQ/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

fit a 3/8" bolt threw the chain? I have the bolts and nuts, just want to make sure the chain holds the bolt.

Yes, the above referenced Grade 30 chain should be at least 0.39" inside width.
Don't forget to use washers.

Thanks Jeeper; I got grade 5 bolts and locknuts w/ washers. It should be set.

take a drive over to your local U-Haul dealership. They still use that type of hook up. Maybe they can help you with your problem.

Harbor Freight sells a nice set of safety chains with spring locking hooks for under $10.
A 3/8" bolt will work fine, with two big washers to prevent it from pulling through the chain links or metal.

The snaps will help the chains stay on the hitch. Just go to the store and get a couple in the appropriate size.
They are so cheap that this is a no brainer, really.
