Hammer blow coupling ???

Hi all I'm new here but have been seeing alot of good advice and help, so I thought I would join and try to get some feedback...ok so my dad recently pass and he left me his boat which is a 1965 Penn Yan with an inboard omc chevy straight 4 when I tried to raise or lower the stern drive it doesn't move i would just here a click so I took off the tilt motor and found that the hammer blow coupling was broken into about 6 pieces I ordered a new one but before i put it in I was woundering if when having the tilt motor out are you supose to be able to use a screwdriver to turn the shaft where the tilt motor hooks up to, cause I tried and it will not move does that mean that the internal gears are froze or is it not supose to turn unless the tilt motor is hooked up, any advise or help will be wonderful thanks in advance

I can put a screwdriver in mine and wind the drive up or down (slow as snails, but shouldn't require much torque), so yeah, sound like something is tight in the clutch or horizontal shaft is binding in yours. When the roll pins break on the horizontal shaft, the little broken bits can jam up a new shaft if not fished out.
If the drive is on- remove the quadrant gear and see how smooth it lifts by hand - trunnions might need grease.

W I take the 4 bolts out of what I think is the clutch pack cover. the cover will not come off is there something else that holds it on? Any idea what stern drive this is? and after I took off the quadrant gear I can lift the stern drive with ease smooth as can be.

just whatever sealant the last person used, and an o-ring, but the o-ring shouldn't put up much of a fight.

Any sugestions on how to go about getting it off..hammer and screwdriver?
and any idea of what sterdrive this is?

That's an OMC Electric Shift Stringer - I've got one a few years younger than yours.

I know the spring clip that Howard is talking about, but I've never taken my clutch pack apart. A screwdriver should get the clip off with no trouble. If you don't have a manual, you may want to get one dealing with the clutch pack. From what I have heard it can be a little tricky to work with.

all OMC drives from 1964-1977 were electric shift and simply called "The OMC Sterndrive" by OMC
Units were identified by engine model for ordering parts.
shop.evinrude.com has parts and availability online, but they only go back to 1968
That little bullet style lower unit might predate 1968, not sure.

This is the logo on the top of my sterndrive

so is it still a OMC Electric Shift Stringer

Yup: OMC = Outboard Marine Corporation.

I think OMC started building the drives around '62, but didn't use an I4 Chevy engine until '64. I'm guessing you've got a '64 or '65 (I think you said your boat is a '65). Either way - you got an electric shift.
