I live near Bellingham Wa. and fish the local waters. I want to halibut fish ,and catch one also, but do not want to go out to P.A. or points west. Does any one have knowledge of halibut in this area say east side of san juans or up towards Point Roberts ?

Try posting a question at the forums at www.gamefishin.com

Its a Washington State based web site that has lots of active members in the North end. You will get help there.

ifish.net is more Oregon based then Washington based.

Try www.halibut.net/. There are some Puget Sound reports. Quite a few tips. Sorry to say I have yet to catch my first one. I'll try again this year on the West/Southwest side of Whidbey Island. A 20-40 lb. fish would be almost as good as being single again! Tight lines to all.

Re: halibut in the san juans

Sorry to say that the web site I mentioned above has very few Puget Sound reports on halibut. Maybe you will find other info there that will be of value to you. Good luck to you. If you don't get a halibut maybe you will get some of those San Juan ling cod.

Re: halibut in the san juans

Thanks Rich, I posted on Halibet.net last year and got 1 response. I researched it and determined that the "Tribal" bouys or floats are in the area that you want to fish. "BY GOLLY" I just helped you out with that info. I also posted on a site linked in FISHING IN THE NORTHWEST last year and have not received a hit to date. My daughter will have to enroll me in GAMEFISHING.COM ,I am not smart enough to do it on my own. Jerry

Re: halibut in the san juans

They just published the season for this year for inland waters areas 6-11. See the WDFW web site. Open from April 9 to June 8, but closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Hope you get one this year. I'm going to try again. I just put 400' of cable on my downrigger so I'll be able to get deeper and try some new areas. I'm going to go to the web sites for halibut and also look them up in the library. I've done both of those things before but still haven't caught a halibut.
I'll definitely be after a ling cod or two this year also. Wish I could learn to cook them like they do in the restaurants. Maybe just need a little more practice. Tight lines to you.

Re: halibut in the san juans

Thanks, I saw that. I am wanting to buy an electric adapter for my Penn 345Gti but the $400. plus shipping is not in the cookie jar just yet. Last month I removed the rub rail from the boat to do some repair etc,I should be done by the end of the month. There is a good book out by Terry Rudnick entitled "HOW TO CATCH TROPHY HALIBUT". Good book. There is stuff on the web. Not having dined with you at your favorite fish grotto all I can give you is my favorite recipie/ dry fish, salt & pepper, dip in plain flour, shake, dip in beat eggs, final coat can be Panko bread crumbs, or plain flour,or corn flour, or bread crumbs. Then deep fry in 375* oil. good eats

Re: halibut in the san juans

Thanks for the recipe. Hopefully I'll be able to try it on something I catch myself and not fish from Albertson's or QFC.
We've got steady winds here in Puget Sound for awhile. But I'll get out soon and try for a fresh one.

Re: halibut in the san juans

flounderman, i took a "salmonar" class from jim a few years ago and he dedicated one class to bottom fishing abound the islands...was a great class and will take it again soon...he is very generous with his information there was a spot just off pt whitehorn that some others had claimed gave up small halibut (or was that birch point?) :)

Re: halibut in the san juans

I have fished both points in about 30' to 80' of water and caught flounder, I will try deeper and see what happens. Point Whitehorn has a lot of kelp. HBH, do you fish out of Blaine or Bellingham? GP1 where is it that you launch from?

Re: halibut in the san juans

It must be the 100' contour that you speak of. Thanks HBH, I still have a bit of work ahead of me to have my boat ready for the water. Have you guys read the March issue of "THE REEL NEWS"? It seems that crab will be the same as last year, even though we left a 58,000lb surplus in our quota for area 7.
