Hair loss?

Any members here using any preparations to stem/slow/restore hair? And if so, what are the particulars.

Junior Boomyal, 18 years old, has been losing his hair. To date it is just thinning. There are no bald spots. When he aggressively runs his hands thru his hair significant quantities of very small (anemically formed) hairs fall out.

We have no genetic baldness in either side of the family, at least not in recent memory. He has been to the school clinic, for a blood test, to see if there might be a thyroid issue (mrs boomyal and sister boomyal have it) but his is fine.

Mrs Boomyal thinks that several years of heavy hair gel may have weakened/damaged his folicals. He does have an appointment with a dermatologist in April but I thought I would see if anyone has had experience here or is using something for similar circumstances.

Yea boom I use a hat to keep my hair from falling out. Even if it falls out the hat keeps in in a nice pile on top of my head. So far I dont think anybody suspects anything. A lot of people wear hats, it looks quite natural. :D

I think you call that a crown Reel Poor. Ya better not let anyone get above you. They might get blinded from looking down inside the crown. :p

Re: Hair loss?

I was told when I was in my teens that I was going bald and was given some sugestions. I didnt believe it of course and didnt follow directions so I am pretty bald now and have been for sometime (42).
It seems like it was sugested to keep it short, comb it gently and use conditioner. Before I joined the army I kept it long treated it harshly and it wasnt unusual to end up with motor oil, gasoline or assorted other caustic chemical all over me. I also think I remeber being told that hats were not good.
Maybe a dermatologist or someone should be consulted since it doesnt run in your family.
Or maybe it's a temporary thing, my cat went through a period of loosing patches of fur, before we could get her to a vet she recovered and the hair came back.

Tell him to get married. Once he's married, losing hair will be the least of his wories!

Re: Hair loss?

The theory is that testosterone creates a product called DHT which is suppose to be what causes male pattern baldness. Rogaine and propecia use a chemical that blocks testosterone which will block the DHT. Not a good idea in my book. Us guys need that stuff or what do we become.

I think the problem you are faced with is that all of the remedies out there are for male pattern baldness which is hereditary. Hair Genesis is one that has a different approach by the use of natural ingredients. My guess is these products are placebos. Go to hair genesis web site and look at their testimonies.

Re: Hair loss?

Boomyal, have you tried putting some of that mousse stuff in his hair? We used to put cow stuff on our garden and it really made it grow.
Seriously, we have a friend whose 13 yr old daughter is losing her hair. They took her to a Dr. and he diagnosed her problem as alopecia. Got home, looked it up and sure enough, 'alopecia..hair loss.' They haven't found anything yet to help.
John

Yeah eurolarva, I am highly sceptical of naturopathic remedies. They are never verified and seldom available thru normal sources. I have a neighbor lady down the street who drives a Lincoln LS off of the proceeds of sugar pills by Manatek. Heck, if I asked her, she'd probably pull something out of her bag for baldness.

Their idea is to capatilize on an emotional need and milk you for $1 to $? per day, in perpetuity. IMHO a real recurring income scheme.

BTW, I did look at their site and it did not change my impression of the industry.

We think that overuse of mousse/stiff gel could have a part in the problem. One always blames overuse/indulgence of something on their kids maladies. Probably it is just a coincidence. As for the cow poop........we'll just leave that for the veggies.

I did look at alopecia and I do not think that applies here. That is a case of hair falling out in patches and that does not seem to be the case for Boomyal Junior. The only symptoms he has is a high rate of hair defection, with general thinning and they all appear to be small underformed hairs. Kinda like they were cut off in their prime. :D

Re: Hair loss?

boomer, there are only 2 remedies that are proven to work and approved by the FDA.Monoxidil 2% topical solution and Propecia tablets.Monoxidil is over the counter and can be had at Costco for about $7 per month supply.Propecia is by prescription and a 90 day supply can be had at Walmart mail order pharmacy for about $130.He should use them both immediately!!!Hair loss may subside from immediately to 90 days.He should also take at least 50-100mgs of B-complex and 300-1000mcg of Biotin and Panothenic acid. The only shampoos and conditioners that he uses should be from health food stores and they should be either Biotin shampoo or Jojoba shampoo or Panthenol shampoo.Dont pick and choose some of this.HAVE HIM DO ALL OF THIS.Loosing his hair can be a life changing experience and he should do all he can to prevent it.I would be glad to speak further on this .If you like leave me your email address.

Re: Hair loss?

CC, I have forwarded your statement to my son at school. His mother (Mrs Boomyal) did just send him a package of High Potency Vitimans. I'm not sure of their makeup.

Here's a recent picture of him, I don't think he is ready to be bald yet. He is displaying the gel that he has since quit using.

Re: Hair loss?

Most male pattern baldness is a process. First the hair gets thinner and less defined, then abreviated and then it falls out. This is tramatic for most young men. I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand as just a fact of life. Each man is different in how they deal with it but I am encouraged that you are seeking professional help.

I was very concerned that I would end up like my dad who was basically bald by 21. I am now 40 and have a better than average head of hair for my age. But the anxiety of losing my hair was real and cost me many a sleepless night. Your son may or maynot consider this serious, but there is nothing vain or unmanly about not wanting to lose your hair. The only solution is hair replacement. Monoxidil will possibly halt the process of losing your hair but it very infrequently grows it back. I was never a big fan of spraying rat **** on my head and that is how this stuff was discovered.

Listen to your dermatologist, maybe it is something unrelated or something to do with stress or diet. Women abuse their hair in ways that make it hard to believe it could ever grow out of their heads. I would be very surprized if it has anything to do with the mousse or gel. They are typically just wax.

There are now options for young men who want to do something about their condition. Not all are cheap but take the time to hear all of them. I feel for your son. There is nothing easy about having to address your mortality at such a young age. If he is seeing stundted growth of the folical he is probably looking at standard male pattern baldness.

Thanks ob, that's because Mrs Boomyal and I have tried to steer him away from the ethics purveyed by the party of PW and Rolmops. ;)

Crab Bait, that is an interesting link and a good testimony. We'll give it some consideration. It kinda reminds me of what I asked Mrs Boomyal when she indicated that severe hair gel might have caused the proplem. I asked why Brylcream wouldn't have smothered my follicles. Maybe Emu Oil is the new Brylcream. I certainly have a full head of hair and I certainly used plenty of Brylcream in my day. :D
