JB, and All,

I'm to the point in my resto. that I've decided to make it a center console. I'm in the interior planning stage and one question I have is fuel storage.

The old set up, (bass) had a 12 gallon above floor tank. That's too small for a 90 hp. Rude.

My question is: How are your Montauk's set up for fuel supply. The last Montauk I did, we went with self contained six gallon tanks. On this boat, I'd like to go with a single 18.

Any ideas on placement? I cannot put anything BELOW the floor.

Howdy, DJohns.

First of all, not all Boston Whaler 17's are Montauks. Built from 1974 to 2000, a Montauk has a fiberglass center console and a patented reversible pilot seat (RPS in Whaletalk). There were variations in the console and teak was discontinued as trim sometime in the late 80s

The space under the RPS is used for fuel storage. Two "standard" 6 gal tanks, 2 Tempo 13gal tanks or a single tank up to about 28gal fit there. I have a Tempo 28 in my Montauk.

You can get a lot of Whaler expertise and advice on www.continuouswave.com go to the forums, but there are lots of good pics of a variety of Whalers in the Cetacea section.

Good luck. :)

JB,

Thanks for the tips.

The current project is not a Whaler or Montauk for that matter. I've just seen various ways, that I admired, on how they handled fuel storage. It was a challenge for the Whaler folks seeing that under floor storage was impossible for them-foam and all.

I like the sound of the 28. I'll check into the website.

Thanks again.

B,

Another question. How do you fuel the 28 gal.tank.

Do you have a fuel guage?

Hi.

The tank is secured by buckled straps. To fuel it I unbuckle it and slide it aft about a foot.

I can read the mechanical guage in the tank without moving it.

Good luck. :)
