Had to send a FAX or "Back in the 20th Century."

Had to send a FAX yesterday to a company I have an investment with. Either snail mail or FAX, no email address. Realized that it has been years since I FAXed anybody and my main desktop doesn't even have the capability to do so. Have a twenty some year old desktop as a back up that I can dual boot either Windows XP or Linux. Took about 20 minutes to remember how to do it but did get it sent and best of all I saved 68 cents and an envelope. So proud of myself.

I remember when faxes first came out and how we could send sketches back and forth and save days and weeks waiting for the mail. I haven’t sent one in years although I think my hp printer can do it. Thermal paper I bet no one has hacked a fax machine.

I was just looking through all my notes from a building project that was done in 2000. Pages and pages of faxed notes. It really was the time saver of the day.

Still have a land line and lazer printer/fax/scanner

Still use the fax that is sitting in my office. On several applications it saves a step ... scan and send vs. scan, save, and send.

Hmm. Think my printer has a fax function. I also have a BT analog phone line -->BT adapter that can dial through my cell phone. I wonder if the printer could use that. But on the rare occasions that I need to fax, there are still a couple of free services online that will fax a scanned image. Dunno if I'd send anything sensitive that way though.

I remember the early days of sending electronic drawings back and forth between us and our office in the UK via 2400 b/s modem.

Transmission lines where very slow during the day time. Last thing you did before heading home for the day was to copy your drawing the "Server", dial and waited for the worlygig tone to push send......hope for the best.

Had a 60/40 chance of arriving in the morning only to find an error messsage on your transmission. Some times took 2-3 tries to complete a transmission.

Asked why fax.........for security reasons. More secure than e-mail

I was talking more specifically about the third party free fax services. Your information ends up on their servers, who knows what they do with it. There are certainly ways to transmit information securely. Your information is much more likely to get leaked due to their carelessness
