I have a 2000 90 hp johnson. I had to take lower unit out to replace water pump...also had
bad o ring on shift rod...so had to remove that...I tried counting turns...but that turned out
to be inaccurate...so I guessed when reassembling rod. Motor was fine initially....but a couple
of times, you would move lever into forward and gear would not connect properly, causeing
a clattering sound like gears not fully engaged. I then pulled it back into neutral and shoved it
hard into forward and it would go into gear again. Then the next few times the throttle would
act normally again. Is this because of inaccurate length of shift rod?
