Condition is everything! -----------Age is in the eye of the beholder.----------- Same reason there are 5 year old engines on the scrap pile.----------poor maintenance or abuse.

I have a 1969 9.5 Johnson that runs like a top. A 1975 50hp Johnson also runs like a top. A 1983 60hp Johnson that is on my boat and a 1986 Johnson that I'll know more about once the weather warms up. Then there is the 1978 35hp Evinrude that is on the Lund I ran for about 5 years and my brother is now enjoying. I trust any one of these engines to take me miles down the river and then bring me back.

I picked up a 73 Johnson 6 HP recently.----Good looking motor too.---------Found both coils cracked as per usual.----Took it apart and found that piston rings still showed factory machining marks.----Going to run like a new machine.------Picked up a 2006 4 stroke 6 HP motor ( black ) for parts , nice looking motor but scrap.

So you've backed up my point.-------------------- Age is meaningless.
Unless of couse one just has to have a late model engine.

That's funny cause when I got it back the first time the choke wasn't engaging from the key. I called and he said to loosen the. 7/8' bolts that hold the choke mechanism and try it again . It then starting to work properly , but I definetly didn't look to see if it was actually engaging I could just hear it clicking and assumed it was working I'll check that tonight for sure. Is it possible I'm getting a vacuum going on or a flooding issue?? What causes a vacuum effect? I just got it back yesterday so I have a lot of digging to do. Mind you when it did start I warmed it up and took it to the river and it purred like a kitten all afternoon just wouldn't start cold? Thanks

I agree, choke may not be working. Either not closing fully or not at all. Another possibility may be improperly adjusted floats not allowing the bowls to fill up. Last of all---- vacuum leak. Vacuum leaks at fuel line connections most often.

Ok so I fixed the bad threads in the head and instead of pumping the bulb to much I just give it like two pumps and used the manual choke and it fired up a lot easier than before . Ran good . We left for a couple hours I came home turned on the hose didn't even touch the primer bulb and boom she started right up. So far so good gonna take her for a ride tomorrow. Got a few more things to mess with , at least it's starting and running good. Thanks for all the help

Good to hear, please let us know how it turns out over the next few trips and exactly what you did to fix it. We like to know :)

Fantastic! With a little love and care these old engines just keep running.

The 1978 35hp Evinrude I had, which my little brother now has, in the spring after sitting for 4 months it's just hook up some fuel, pump the bulb, about 1/3 throttle on the warm up lever, choke then turn the key. Now if only I could get my 1983 60hp to run like this.

Re: Had carbs rebuilt by a so called decent mechanic???

Got another minor issue since the motors being running ok I was putting the cowling back on and pulled a wire from my upper right coil . When I shove it back in there the motor runs just fine my question is can i hot glue it in place or just go ahead and buy another one? Another question when one coil is out does it kill both on that side ?? Thanks.
