Installed the Standard Horizon GX1850 VHF
Looks like it will do way more things then I'll ever need unless I go commercial fishing, or in a slimmer chance I become popular and folks want to know where I'm floating

Figured out how to get the unit to use internal GPS so maybe (I say maybe because maybe I didn't do it correct) it won't Beeeeep it's been 10 minutes with no GPS fix.

Can see where the unit does all kinds of things with AIS tracking, can display other boats using AIS, but geezers don't see much of that happening on Dale Hollow

Did you have a spot at the helm to fill or do you normally talk to yourself in a dark room with nobody home?…..lol

Did you register and get your MMSI number?

Yes got the MMSI number free from power squadron

Guess I didn't ask a question and was hoping you would respond, since your the one who mentioned this model when I was looking. I cut a hole and mounted it flush.

Like how does some of the options work?

It took me a while with the manual to figure out how to set it up using nema 2000 and it's internal GPS. Thought I would let it use one of my Simrad displays but that didn't work.

I assume your NMEA network sees the Display as a device?
Does your Display supports PGN 129029: GNSS position?
Should have been able to use 0183 serial if nothing else.

I have one plotter is connected to serial GPS Antenna one one plotter. The other plotter is using an internal antenna.

Have both plotters on the NMEA 2000 network. Allows me to pick and choose which GPS input I use as the network primary.

I couldn't get the VHF to use anything but it's own internal antenna. Used search function and found all devices in the list, and did try a couple of them but only took with the internal antena

Have been reading thru the NSS7 manuals and still seeing if it will tell me if there is some other way

Found this on SH website

Go to the radios NMEA 2000 Setup menu. We normally suggest changing the Device Number on the radio to something that does not match up to other equipment on the network. If you have a GPS antenna with a device number of 002, then make sure the radio is not set to 002. Try a radio device number such as 009. We find having different numbers reduces confusion on the network. After changing the device number, you will go to the option called Select Device (NMEA 2000 Setup menu) and run a search for devices. Start by selecting your GPS chart plotter and tap the button under Set once. Go to the main screen and see if it’s working. A 2K icon will appear in addition to your position. If not, go back to the Select Device menu and select the next device on the list. Sometimes it’s the secondary devices that act as more consistent sources of NMEA 2000 data.

Go to the radios GPS setup menu. Go into the NMEA 0183 IN/OUT submenu. Turn On the DSC/DSE output sentences.

Not to pry but curious, does this mean you get your steering/trim problem fixed?

Thanks, I'll give it a try that next time out

Went out today and on first start of the motors and turning on the vhf I could see that if found position info. Run to a cove, and shut down the motors which turned off the network, vhf still on.

About 10 minutes later the beep, beep and did that for a minute or so then turned off before I could swim over and turn vhf off.

Start motors to leave and turn vhf on and the vhf would did not find position info. Will try your instructions to see if it can fix the issue

Not to pry but curious, does this mean you get your steering/trim problem fixed?

No issue, your not prying. I still have the 8 turns lock to lock and appears it will stay that way. It can be fixed with a variable helm and all new larger lines, meaning big bucks

The trim was fixed by replacing the entire trim system on starboard motor

First the GX1850 must be turned ON when everything else is turned ON. Figuring it's a NEMA 2K thing that everyone is waking up saying hey who's online. They all talk and exchange stuff and all good

Turn the VHF on after powering up then the VHF missed the pre-party warm up. Missed the buss and starts crying in 10 minutes wondering why no one will talk to me

Same thing happens if all good and you turn power off the displays. Then it again wonders where did everyone go

So my key first click powers up displays, second click powers up motors. So I can turn motors OFF but can leave displays ON, but wonder if there is any power going to the motors. Most likely no because vessel view turns off, but not 100% sure

I need to look at a doc I have at work, but I’m pretty sure NMEA 2000 is hot swappable.

That being the case, it doesn’t matter when a node is powered up. A node will try to connect continuously until successful or times out.

I suspect you have a power issue between vessel view and the NMEA 2000 link, although I wouldn’t rule out network comparability issue with the radio either.

By chance, is the radio NMEA 2000 certified or NMEA compatible?

Most installation instructions recommend the power to the back bone to come directly from the battery. Interesting that yours is on a key switch. My back bone is always hot since it’s wired directly to the battery

Don't know if GX1850 is certified or not. Quick search doesn't mention certified, but is not do hot swap. If I think about it next time at the boat I'll turn one of the displays off and back on to see if it reconnects

The displays use CAN with 2K connections.

If 2K has a direct connect to the Bat is unknown, didn't look when I was last behind the helm, but being a Chap I'm sure it was done cheapest and easiest way possible
